Senior Product Manager, Energy Markets and Bunker Optimisation

Maersk Group - A.P. Møller Mærsk

Why should you work on the Energy Transition Platform?
The world is facing a climate emergency. We see it as our obligation – as an industry leader and with the resources available to us – to do all we can to get to net zero operations as fast as possible and to help our customers decarbonise their global supply chains end to end. In early 2022, we announced the ambitious goal of advancing the target year for our commitment to reach net zero emissions by a full decade, to 2040.

Role Summary:
We are seeking a product manager who is passionate about the energy transition. In this role, you will lead the technical platform for our bunker optimisation capability and drive continuous improvements both now and in the future.

The customised bunker optimisation model generates fuel loading plans for vessels and reflects price arbitrage across ports. It optimises bunker plans for our fleet of over 700 owned and time-chartered vessels by determining the optimal amount of each type of bunker to source at each port, considering constantly evolving prices and consumption estimates.

This role is crucial in reducing overall bunker spend, lowering ocean emissions by optimising green fuel usage, and adjusting for regulatory incentives. We seek a candidate who demonstrates a balance of software engineering understanding, effective business acumen, and product management expertise. You will work with global operational and trading teams to understand requirements and modelling subject matter experts. You have the ability to make data-driven decisions, and exhibit leadership qualities. You will have the opportunity to work at the forefront of the energy transition in shipping at a deeply committed and values driven industry first mover.

Our intent is to build a system that can rapidly make a difference now and that will still be relevant in 2040 and beyond. We are using advanced technology such as the Elixir functional programming language and data mesh. Our ways of working are agile. You will work closely with an Engineering Team that uses pair programming, test-driven development, continuous integration and delivery to enable multiple deployments to production every day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver the Outcome: take accountability for road map delivery and drive accountability in others.
  • Product Development: Lead the development of a technology product focused on bunker optimisation and green fuels of the future.
  • Customer Engagement: Collaborate with customers to understand their optimisation needs and ensure our product meets their requirements.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with software engineering, data science, and operations teams to design and implement product features.
  • Performance Monitoring: Track and analyse product performance, making data-driven decisions to track impact capture, enhance functionality and improve user experience.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Communicate product vision, progress, and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.

About You:

  • You posses the ability to stay focused on delivery in a complex environment.
  • You love ambiguity, navigating to alignment, and have a passion for details.
  • You can present to diverse audiences commanding both subject matter and technical expertise.
  • You have a passion for building products and working in the intersection of business, data, and technology systems.
  • You can multi-task and manage multiple projects at a given time and under tight deadlines.
  • You are a professional, highly dedicated, detail-oriented, and energetic personality, with the ability to work and thrive in a team environment.
  • You have demonstrated the ability to create and deliver complex solutions including building platforms.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in Science, Engineering, or a technical field.
  • Experience in Energy Markets is a non-negotiable prerequisite.
  • 10+ yrs. Product manager/engineering and/or product development experience in a regulated and high performance environment like banking or energy trading.
  • Familiarity with Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) optimization problems and/or operations research topics.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, demonstrable success in building relationships across technology and business organisations.
  • Successful management and/or analytics experience in complex environments, identifying and resolving challenges.
  • Knowledge in energy efficiency, decarbonization, and climate calculations.
  • Proven experience of working across the full product lifecycle from initiation through to benefits realization within agile or XP framework.
  • Proficiency in tools like JIRA, Confluence, and MIRO.
  • Proven ability to think, write and present in a logical and structured way.
  • Experience of delivering updates, changes and requirement artefacts according to defined standards including user stories, monthly executive reviews, quarterly c-suite reviews and annual operating plans.
  • Strong analytical skills, including a thorough understanding of how to interpret customer / business needs and translate them into application and operational requirements.
