Senior mechanical engineer for Danish Hydrogen Backbone Project
Energinet
Help ensure that we in Denmark reach our goal of 70% CO2 reduction by 2030 and a fully carbon-free society by 2050. This is your opportunity to make these ambitions a reality!
We must store our green energy from wind and solar cost-effectively so that we can maintain our security of supply while succeeding with the green conversion. We already have some of the solutions, while others have not been sufficiently demonstrated yet. But with the world's best energy system, razor-sharp brains, and a clear goal of independence from fossil fuels, we are well on our way.
What we are missing now is the right profile to lead pivotal activities towards the first hydrogen transmission system in Denmark. Your new workplace will be at our office in Ballerup with great opportunities to also work from home, and flexibility in relation to the organization of your work.
The Organization and department
You will be part of the Technology Development (Teknologiudvikling) department in the Gas Transmission business unit, asset owner and operator of the Danish gas transmission infrastructure. You will be joining a growing team of dedicated employees with a broad professional expertise in design, process optimization, asset management, commissioning, and technical project management. We are especially leading the design of green gas infrastructure projects and coordinating efforts spanning from project planning to construction (e.g. pipelines, M/R, compressor stations). We are also highly client-oriented and provide engineering services to the rest of the Energinet group and collaborate with dedicated colleagues who are supporting us with e.g. EHSQ, permitting and procurement processes.
The Danish government has decided to green light the construction of the first part of the Danish Hydrogen Backbone project, that will connect Danish hydrogen producers with customers tin Germany. In its first phase, the project comprises new and repurposed pipelines, as well as a number of stations for hydrogen injection/extraction, conditioning, metering and regulation. The project represents the first hydrogen transmission infrastructure of its type, positioning Denmark at the forefront of critical energy infrastructure for the future. We are committed to accelerating the green transition by taking responsibility in our hands and proactively lead the way to the full-decarbonization of the energy system. This is a matter of highly interdisciplinary coordination (including technology, regulations, environment, innovation etc.). Therefore, you should expect to work in close collaboration with experts from other parts of the organization, as well as other national and international partners.
Job description and ideal candidate
We are looking for highly motivated candidates that want to leave their footprint in the path towards a greener society.
You are part of the engineering work package in the Danish Hydrogen Backbone where you are working in a coordinating role with technical project manager. Here you help to ensure the professional level of the project, and to make decisions based on qualified knowledge and data basis, regardless of whether you work according to traditional or agile principles.
You work as discipline expert for projects from as early as the concept and feasibility phases, down to FEED, detail design and implementation, and you contribute to advisory services linked to preparation of technical reports, proposals related to engineering projects and installation of critical equipment.
Responsibilities include:
- preliminary and detailed design of piping systems (onshore), including L/V stations
- line sizing, stress analysis of piping systems (ASME B31.3 & EN 13480)
- preparing and presenting technical diagrams (e.g. P&IDs), reports and materials such as cost estimates, pipeline layouts, design basis and flow simulations.
- developing technical specifications of mechanical equipment for procurement and evaluate offers from contractors.
- performing site inspections during installation and commissioning activities.
It is a requirement that you have at least an MSc from relevant engineering education (e.g. Mechanical, Process/Chemical) with at least 7-10 years of documented experience in working first-handed with gas transport/process infrastructure from relevant industries within the chemical, oil & gas, or energy sectors.
Curiosity and motivation to learn and develop knowledge within relevant gas topics that you are not familiar with are also of key importance.
In addition to the points mentioned above, practical familiarity within the following technical areas is highly valued:
- Design standards and codes for green gas transport infrastructure
- PtX technology (e.g. electrolyzers, e-methanation) and hydrogen compression & conditioning
- Piping materials (metallic and non-metallic)
As a person, you are especially proactive and a do-er. You are cooperative, responsible, quality-conscious and professional as well as able to motivate your colleagues. You are able to find common solutions and can direct your communication to technicians, specialists, suppliers, external partners and authorities. You are able to work independently and thrive on defining and solving challenges yourself and dealing with demanding issues. Your positive and engaging attitude helps maintain a healthy work culture. Also, you must thus be able to immerse yourself in subject areas in which you continuously improve and update your skills.
Travel activity to Energinet's offices and facilities, e.g. in Fredericia and Egtved can be expected, just as travel abroad in connection with international work can also occur.
Language requirements
Fluency in English both speaking and writing is a must.
Fluency in Danish both speaking and writing is recommended.
