Postdoc in Theory and Modelling of Quantum Devices based on Heterostructures of 2D Materials and Oxides - DTU Physics

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Join us as a postdoc to work on theory and first principles-based calculations on hybrid heterostructure quantum devices, consisting of 2D materials and freestanding transition metal oxides, and help discover new quantum phases. The research is supported by ERC Synergy project METRIQS.
If you are excellent and passionate within computational solid-state physics and nanoelectronics modelling, this 2-year postdoctoral position is your opportunity to join our team and drive groundbreaking advancements within an exciting, emerging topic: Recently, transition metal oxides (TMOs), like strontium titanate and barium titanate, has become available as freestanding membranes with thickness down to few nanometers. TMO structures can host a wide variety of important properties, f.ex. ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism, memresistance, or superconductivity. In this project we will investigate the interface between TMOs and 2D materials with a focus on the tuning of emergent properties and high-temperature quantum phases using e.g. twist-angle and external fields.

You will work closely with experimental and theoretical physicists and material scientists at DTU Physics, DTU Energy as well as our experimental collaborators at CSIC and UCM in Madrid, in a large ERC Synergy project (METRIQS).

Responsibilities and qualifications

  • Predict interface atomic and electronic structure based on Density Functional Theory (DFT).
  • Perform electron transport calculations using DFT combined with non-equilibrium Greens function methods.
  • Use Machine Learning (ML) techniques to extend the DFT domain to experimentally relevant system sizes, e.g. predict moiré structures in TMO/2D interfaces.
  • Develop multi-scale, first-principles-based computational workflows enabling screening calculations e.g. varying twist-angle or voltage bias.
  • Collaborate with project partners at DTU, UCM and CSIC hybrid heterostructure quantum devices.
  • Contribute to development of open-source tools.
  • Qualifications focus: Quantum transport simulation based on DFT-NEGF, Machine Learning force-fields, tight-binding models, or molecular dynamics simulation based on DFT, experience with high-performance computers.

As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).
