Prototyping Technician
PLAY A KEY ROLE IN EXPERIMETAL PROJECTS THAT DRIVE ADVACEMENT IN CLEAN ENERGY
At Saltfoss Energy we are developing a nuclear power plant concept fundamentally different from what exists today. By bringing to market an advanced molten salt reactor we are making nuclear an inexpensive, sustainable, and scalable technology that can make fossil fuels a thing of the past and revolutionise energy markets. The opportunity to make an impact on climate change and provide millions of people with cheap and accessible energy is what inspires all of us every day.
Creating an innovation that can impact the world isn’t easy and requires a diverse team bringing together a range of talents and perspectives. We know that we cannot do this alone, so we work closely with regulators, shipyards, academic institutions, and the nuclear industry from all over the world to develop technologies and materials so we can produce an advanced floating nuclear power plant.
This is your chance to become part of a collaborative research environment where you can chart an uncommonly diverse career and help change the world. Saltfoss’ work environment allows for great influence, the possibility to take on responsibility, and personal growth but also demands flexibility.
THE ROLE
We are looking for a Prototyping Technician who thrives on practical, hands-on work. In this role, you will support the full lifecycle of experimental setups and molten salt loops - from initial design and assembly to operation and decommissioning.
You will join a dynamic prototyping team and contribute directly to both the design and execution of cutting-edge experiments. Your work will play a key role in materials qualification, component selection, and the validation of design solutions for our molten salt reactor.

- Fabricate, cut, route, and assemble custom parts for test rigs - including component supports, enclosures, insulation, and other tailored constructions.
- Support the commissioning, operation, and decommissioning of experimental setups.
- Contribute to design activities, integrating hands-on insights and lessons learned from prototyping and assembly work.
- Maintain and calibrate workshop tools, equipment, and machinery to ensure consistent performance.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, assembly guides, and mechanical schematics.
- Contribute to workshop inventory and general organization of the workspace.
- Support the continuous improvement of prototyping workflows, workshop processes, and safety procedures.
- Assist in selecting and procuring components, tools, and materials for test rigs and workshop use.
- Ensure compliance with relevant safety, quality, and industry standards in all workshop activities.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
- You have a background in fields such as carpentry, blacksmithing, electrical work, or a similar hands-on trade.
- You bring 5+ years of practical experience in a workshop, field service, or comparable technical environment.
- You have a track record of building high-precision components or products for demanding applications.
- You are confident operating machinery such as mitre saws, bench drills/mills, handheld drills, routers, and other construction tools.
- Familiarity with mechanical components like pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, and instrumentation is a plus.
- Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD is an advantage.
PERSONAL COMPETENCIES
- You have a passion for practical, hands-on work and enjoy building new setups from the ground up.
- You have strong attention to detail and understand when precision is critical - and when it’s not.
- You thrive in a fast-paced workshop environment, where problem-solving and hands-on execution go hand in hand.
- You take full ownership of your tasks, driving work forward with initiative and accountability.
- You hold yourself to high safety standards and respect compliance in everything you do.
- You are keen to grow by learning from experienced colleagues and embracing new technical challenges.
