Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a number of vacant PhD scholarships related to a Manufacturing of Denmark (MADE) research and development project at the Department of Strategy and Innovation (SI). Expected starting date is mid-August 2020.

The overall topic of the PhD scholarships will be on sustainability and, in particular, on how to develop sustainable manufacturing business models and optimise value chain design for sustainability.

The PhD projects will be conducted in collaboration with major Danish companies - like Coloplast, Novo Nordisk, and LEGO - that are committed to the project.

Expectedly, pilots and experiments will be conducted together with the companies. The expected starting date is mid-August 2020.

More specifically, the PhD-projects will focus on:

  • Circular production model to enable retrieval regarding in-use component tracking and later re-use (e.g. take-back programs).
  • Optimal product architecture for sustainability and re-use
  • Optimization of the whole value chain with suppliers and customers for sustainability.

You will be part of a strong team of MADE researchers at CBS (involving 4 faculty and 4 PhD-students) hosted by SI. The staff at this department counts approximately 90, including about 55 faculty members (professors, associate professors, tenure track assistant professors), 7 administrators, and around 30 people hired on temporary contracts as research assistants, post docs, or PhD students.

SI’s research is focused on strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international business. The department’s ambition is to host an internationally leading environment for research and teaching within the broad area of strategy.

About the PhD program
The 3-year PhD program at CBS allows you to conduct research under the supervision of CBS professors, supported by research training courses. The program is highly international, and you are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. The selected candidates will be enrolled in the PhD School of Copenhagen Business School and are expected to participate in the research-training program of the department. This includes a package of courses on innovation, entrepreneurship, econometrics, and publishing.

The department gives priority to applicants with the following qualifications: high grades from their universities, an educational background in the social sciences; and finally, the applicants must be fluent in English.

To be considered for a scholarship, the candidate should have a basic training at the Master’s level (similar to the 3 + 2 Bologna process and a total of 180+120 ECTS). However, applicants who hold a one year Master’s degree may also be considered for evaluation. PhD students who enter the PhD program with a one year Master’s degree (60 ECTS) will be offered a 4-year program and will be considered a Master’s student for the first 2 years of the program.

General information
The 3-year scholarships are fully salaried positions, according to the national Danish collective agreement. The scholarship includes the tuition fees, office space, travel grants, plus a salary - currently starting with app. DKK 28,837 per month (approximately € 3,865) up to DKK 34,865.00 (≈€ 4,670) depending on seniority, plus a pension contribution totaling 17.1% of the base salary.
