Thesis work: Wireless-adaptive control of time synchronization for industrial ap
At ABB, we are dedicated to addressing global challenges. Our core values: care, courage, curiosity, and collaboration - combined with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities - are key drivers in our aim to empower everyone to create sustainable solutions. That's our story. Make it your story.
This position reports to
R&D Team Lead
Your role and responsibilities
ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses. Networked devices sharing common time is an enabler for many industrial applications, e.g., control of autonomous mobile robots as well as automation of electric power and water treatment plants. Time synchronization (TS) for networked devices is typically carried out by one of specialized communication protocols, such as Precision Time Protocol. However, TS over a wireless network (Wi-Fi, 4G/5G, etc.) and achievable time accuracies suffer from variations of network performance. The performance variations may be caused by, e.g., device mobility or a changing number of clients. One way to mitigate effects of the performance variations is to make control of TS itself “aware” of them and adapt. A challenge therein is to develop a computationally efficient adaptation approach. Details: • 1 student • Start ASAP, for a total working time of 5 months (30 ECTS per student) • Work on-site at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, ABB may cover the accommodation Research questions: • Which wireless network conditions most significantly degrade time synchronization (TS) accuracy? • Which approach to adaptive TS control efficiently “combats” wireless performance variations? Goals: • Review existing wireless performance studies • Propose approach to a wireless-adaptive TS control and a respective algorithm to use • Verify the proposed approach in different wireless network scenarios Approach: • Study literature on wireless network aware control and TS communication protocols • Design algorithmic extension(s) for wireless-adaptive control in a case-study TS protocol • Implement a model of the wireless-adaptive control that considers different impact factors • Analyze efficiency and computational complexity of the proposed solution
Qualifications for the role
- Strong affinity for exploring new topics
- Good knowledge of control systems, feedback control, and optimization methods
- General understanding of operation of Wi-Fi and cellular/mobile networks, and challenges therein
- Previous experience with modelling and programming in MATLAB and Simulink
- Good spoken and written English
