PhD scholarship in Nanofluidic Modelling - Nano-tribology

Roskilde Universitet (RUC)

Ph.d. & forskning

The Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University (RUC), and the Department of Mathematics, Swinburne University of Technology (SUT), invite applications for a PhD scholarship in Nanofluidic Modelling from August 1 or soon thereafter.

The scholarship is limited to a period of 3 years, and the successful candidate will obtain a double degree from SUT and RUC. During the study the student will spend approximately half the time at SUT and half the time at RUC; the working agreement will follow the current working place. Successful candidates will be expected to submit a full application to both SUT and RUC by 31 May 2019 and candidates must apply for admission to both RUC and SUT under the partnered PhD scheme.

Description of the PhD project
The project title is Nano-tribology and is divided into two tasks, (a) and (b).

(a) Recently an entirely new theoretical framework to understand a class of fluids has been developed by

Dyre and colleagues at Roskilde University. The theory is called Isomorph Theory, and can, if the liquid

features strong correlations between the virial pressure and the potential energy, predict the dynamical and

structural properties along an entire line (an isomorph) in the phase diagram. Isomorph Theory has been

tested thoroughly through theory, simulations and experiments and has drawn the attention of research

groups world wide. Isomorph Theory still has not been applied to multi-scale (or generalized)

hydrodynamics. The first part of the project will deal with this shortcoming; not only to span the application

and test of Isomorph Theory, but primarily in order to understand the underlying physical processes on the

nano-scale in order to set the stage for part (b).

(b) The second part deals with nano-tribology. The understanding gained in part (a) will be

used to calculate the friction coefficient between different lubricants (alkanes, ionic liquids or nanoparticle

suspensions) and the solid walls. Also, the frequency-dependent mechanical properties of the lubricants will

be calculated. From this the project seeks to formulate a continuum model that can predict the mechanical

stress in the fluid using the friction coefficient and the lubricant’s mechanical properties as key model input

The student will work with the underlying theories and perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations

comparing simulation data with theoretical predictions.

The Doctoral Schools
The student will be enrolled in the Department of Mathematics, School of Science, Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology (FSET). The Faculty is a major engine of the research at Swinburne and is a dynamic hub of frontline research and teaching in the physical sciences, engineering and information technology. The University’s major research centres are all located in FSET, which a new major centre in applied mathematics and computation anticipated to commence in 2019.

You will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Ph.D School of Science and Environment at Roskilde University. About the Ph.D. school: We teach and research application-oriented and innovative in the science of the real world and in the environment. We work with the fundamentals of science that determines and develops the theories on which science is based. Fundamental and applied research goes hand in hand. Our research generate new knowledge, innovation, patents and offers an earnings potential to the business community.
