In-house Patent Specialist - UK or Denmark

As our patent specialist, you will contribute to developing and maintaining our patent portfolio by harvesting inventions, drafting and prosecuting patent applications and defending our patent rights. Additionally, you will be involved in monitoring IPR generated by competitors and freedom-to-operate evaluations for NKT Photonics products.

NKT Photonics is a dynamic, international high-tech company and a leader in the development, manufacture and supply of high-performance fiber lasers and photonic crystal fibers. We employ some of the best and most creative people in our industry and they have helped to make us one of the fastest growing and most innovative photonics companies in the World.

Now is a great time to join us as we embark on significant and hugely exciting growth plans; not just here, but across our global organisation - so be prepared for change and career opportunities!

It’s an exciting, inspiring place to work where we encourage both personal and career development. To support our plans, we are now looking for a talented Patent Specialist to join our growing team.

The Role

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications.
  • Identify patentable inventions in close collaboration with our R&D teams and engineers.
  • Prepare or support opposition proceedings before the EPO.
  • Monitor competitor IPR.
  • Provide freedom to operate evaluation and advice and prepare patent validity opinions for competitor patents.
  • There will be some travel to other NKT Photonics offices within Europe.

The Individual

  • Relevant Intellectual Property (IP) expertise gained from either an in-house patent department or as external consultant.
  • Experience in analysing the patentability of inventions, preparing and prosecuting patent applications and general patent counselling is expected. A background in optics, laser technology or physics in general would be useful.
  • Preferably a professionally qualified European Patent Attorney – or equivalent.
  • Experience with freedom-to-operate opinion work and evaluating infringement by third parties is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical skills: able to question complex information, identify cause and effect and deliver solutions.
  • Effective communicator and relationship builder with the ability to deliver commercial and operational messages and influence stakeholders drawn from a wide audience. Fluency in English - verbal and written - is essential, as is the ability to effectively communicate technically complex issues to non-technical people.
  • Passionate about what you do.

We embrace a culture in which a healthy work-life balance is encouraged and we promote a positive, supportive working environment. To support our growth plans, we are investing in expanding our facilities and rapidly enlarging our talented teams. We provide a great place to work with good people and exciting, industry leading products.

If we sound like the place you would like to work, please send your CV and a brief covering letter to us and we will be in contact soon.
