Postdoc in Bragg Coherent X-Ray Microscopy

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Ph.d. & forskning
Storkøbenhavn

Frist 5. august 2019

We are searching for a postdoc to spearhead the development of a new coherent x-ray imaging technique.

The position is funded by an ERC Starting Grant that aims to use Bragg coherent x-ray microscopy to quantitatively map nanoscale electric and elastic fields inside bulk materials. The project will be among the first to use the new Hard X-Ray Microscopy beamline at the post-upgrade European Synchrotron.

Your main role will be to create the method for reconstructing the 3D lattice strain and misorientation distribution of the sample from full-field x-ray microscopy images. In addition, you will carry out the first experiments to demonstrate the method and oversee its application to the study of nanoscale functionality in ferroelectric and multiferroic materials.

We are a multi-disciplinary group that combines research in optics and condensed matter physics to create unique opportunities for characterizing and understanding structure-property relationships in materials across multiple length scales. We strive to create an open and enjoyable work environment that values creativity, enthusiasm, and collaboration. As a member of the project team, we hope you will encourage and foster these values as you guide and help supervise PhD and MSc students in the research group.

Responsibilities and tasks
As an integral part of the research group, you will:

  • Develop the formalism for carrying out full-field x-ray coherent imaging in the Bragg case.
  • Design and carry out first proof-of-concept experiments for the technique.
  • Oversee the application of the technique to study structure-property relationships in ferroelectric, multiferroic and other functional materials.
  • Travel to international x-ray facilities a few times each year
  • Disseminate the work in scientific articles and at national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to leadership and guidance of PhD, MSc and BSc students in the group.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent in a technical discipline (e.g. physics, chemistry, mathematics, etc.), awarded by the position starting date.

In addition, we are looking candidates with:

  • Understanding of wave optics and computational imaging (i.e. phase-retrieval, CDI).
  • Programing skills (Matlab, Python, C++, etc.).
  • Experience with coherent x-ray imaging, e.g. CDI, ptychography, holography etc.
  • Knowledge/experience in materials science and/or condensed matter physics would be advantageous.
  • A desire and ability to work as a team and contribute to supervision of students
  • Good communication in written and spoken English

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is two years.

Further information
Further information may be obtained from Asst. Prof. Hugh Simons, husimo@fysik.dtu.dk, or Dr. Mario Beltran, beltran@fysik.dtu.dk.

Application Procedure
Please submit your online application no later than 5 August 2019 (local time). Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply online", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include:

  • Application (cover letter)
  • CV
  • Diploma (MSc/PhD)
  • List of publications
  • Names and contact information of three references

Applications and enclosures received after the deadline will not be considered.

All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
