We want to strengthen the environmental and wildlife simulation capacity of bioscience by supporting development of agent-based system simulation models to predict impacts of management of landscapes, both agricultural and natural across Europe. The research team includes software engineers, ecologists, ecotoxicologists, and GIS specialists, and is distributed over a number of European countries. Successful applications will join the core Danish team, which leads the software design and development of the simulation software and its application in risk assessment and wildlife management.

The research area:
Developing predictive tools for landscape management depends on linking social and ecological components of a system effectively. Social-ecological system (SES) simulations are new tools, but are essential since the impact of management is determined by processes acting in local context, and resulting in feedback situations. These relationships can be captured in detailed simulations and used to explore management strategies as well as to understand causal mechanisms for observed real world phenomena. SES simulations therefore have a role in both applied and theoretical studies.

The tasks:
The main task will be to develop models and tools as part of the Animal Landscape and Man Simulation System (ALMaSS) applied to the main ALMaSS activity areas; these being simulation in support of management of animal populations (focal species here are insect populations in agriculture and Danish bird and mammal populations). The successful candidate should support technical development and application of social-ecological system simulation methodologies as part of the ALMaSS team, supporting model development for agricultural insect populations (including bees ladybirds, aphids and aphid parasitoids), and wildlife management (including geese, hare, and red deer). A key activity will be application of SES simulation in research and there will be a team focus on subsequent scientific publication that the candidate will need to support. The candidate will also be welcome to participate in other research activities (existing data or new projects) in the local research environment.

We are seeking a technically qualified person to support the simulation modelling developments. The applicant must have a strong background in simulation modelling and/or programming. A high-level of proficiency in programming, including object-oriented paradigms is essential. Experience of C++, Python is necessary, as all team development is done using these languages. Ability to work and communicate well as part of a team is essential. A scientific background in natural sciences is of benefit, especially physics, engineering or computer science. Good English skills are necessary to communicate with the largely international team.

We may employ at an academic support position (permanent), post-doc, or as a research assistant, depending upon qualifications and career interest.
