DHI US was incorporated in 1997; today we have offices in Lakewood, CO; Solana Beach, CA and Portland, OR. As part of our growth plans we are now looking for a dedicated individual to join our water resource solutions team. Our water resource solutions cover a broad range of modeling applications, including: 1, 2 and 3D river, estuarine and flood modeling as well as advective-dispersive pollutant, particle and geo-morphological modeling.

The Opportunity
DHI is seeking a motivated and dedicated hydraulic and/or geomorphologic modeler, engineer or scientist to assist in executing water resources projects. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate proven expertise and success in technically delivering highly complex projects including such aspects as: floodplain management including flood forecasting, flood mitigation, flood risk analysis and hazard mapping; groundwater-induced flooding; climate change assessments; dam breach and flood defense / failure impact studies; integrated urban, river and coastal flood modeling. As an integral part of the DHI team, the selected candidate will participate in a variety of project activities, including numerical modeling and results processing, engineering calculations, technical report writing, and presentation of solutions to project owners. The DHI water resources department is highly respected in the delivery of real-time monitoring systems that include forecasting, scenario testing and reporting of catchment plus river and canal operations, as well as hydraulic studies for a variety of water resources problem areas including: surface water modeling; climate and meteorological data analysis; modeling of sediment scour and riverine geomorphological changes; integrated urban flood modeling. Our project work is Americas based, but we engage in international projects as well, often in collaboration with other teams in the DHI worldwide group. The position is located in our Lakewood, CO office.

Skills, qualifications and experience
Your attributes and accomplishments will include some combination of the following:

  • A Masters or Doctorate degree in hydraulic engineering or geomorphology or related field from an accredited university.
  • 5 years of experience in implementing hydraulic and / or geomorphological modeling studies.
  • Applicants should have a record of professional experience demonstrating technical report writing, project and technical engineering in the water resources field.
  • Strong academic knowledge in one or more of: physical hydrology, hydraulics engineering / science, geomorphology.
  • Knowledge and experience in hydraulic structure operations and controls is preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience in hydraulic data assimilation for forecast models is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with surface water models such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, MIKE-11, MIKE-21, MIKE FLOOD.
  • Geographical Information System (GIS) capabilities using both Open Source and proprietary solutions and related programming or scripting, along with knowledge of projections and mapping. Knowledge of ESRI (ArcGIS, Python) technologies and processing is preferred.
  • Strong data analysis skills including the application of Python, Pandas etc. to analyzing large data sets a plus.
  • Willingness / ability to travel up to 25% of the time to DHI offices and job sites in the North and South America.
  • Motivation to grow and expand professionally and be willing to work independently or on a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to conduct effective client/stakeholder presentations and written report preparation.
  • Desire to work on national and international projects.
  • Desire to work together with a local and international team of experts.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration and Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) preferred.
  • United States citizen or authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Valid passport or ability to readily obtain one.
  • English – Excellent spoken/written capabilities
  • Spanish and/or Portuguese language capabilities a plus.
