PhD scholarship in Multidisciplinary Design Optimization of Wind Turbines with Smart-Blade Technology

The Department of Wind Energy has a vacancy for a PhD position in the Loads and Control Section (LAC) at DTU Risø Campus. DTU Wind Energy is a mission driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector. The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.

DTU Wind Energy develops state-of-the-art design methods to ensure the best performance, lowest cost and overall structural integrity of wind turbines as well as advance the design, operation and control of entire wind power plants for the future needs of the evolving energy system. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modelling of the non-stationary inflow field, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, structural stability and control. LAC focuses on modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, and control of wind turbines, and implements its research in software tools and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.

Aero-elastic design optimization has proven to be an effective tool for designing wind turbine blades to perform passive load alleviation. However, it is also possible to use active control to reduce loads. It is imperative to incorporate the controller design into the turbine design to develop the optimal mix of both passive and active load alleviation. The present PhD project develops beyond state-of-the-art aero-elastic design optimization capabilities that increase wind turbine energy production and reduce costs by reducing the loads on a wind turbine.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be responsible for

  • Development of wind turbine models suitable for controller design within an optimization framework
  • Development of additional models and methods for advanced and integrated aero-structural-controller optimization.
  • Development of automated ways of designing optimal controllers for the wind turbine which are suitable for numerical design optimization
  • Integration of the models and controller synthesis into an aero-elastic optimization framework
  • Apply the developed models and methods on design problem to demonstrate (by simulations) the impact of optimal controllers and smart-blade technologies in terms of energy production and load reductions.

Part of the PhD project is an external research stay at the Chair of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Munich.

In addition, you are expected to contribute to the following tasks:

  • Assist in teaching the wind energy courses relating to control and optimization and develop course materials if required.
  • Assist in the supervision of our wind energy master students relating to the control and optimization aspects and assist in defining the potential projects for the master students.
  • Contribute to relevant research projects.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The successful candidate is required to have:

  • An MSc degree in wind energy or mechanical engineering
  • Documented knowledge and experience in design optimization of wind turbine blades
  • A well-developed level of applied mathematics
  • Documented knowledge in structural analysis and design sensitivity analysis and a well-developed physical understanding
  • Experience with numerical optimization and programming
  • Experience in the role as teaching assistant at university level courses
  • Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals
  • Fluency in communicating and reporting in English

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
