TERMS OF REFERENCE FOR INTERNSHIP Organizational Unit: Innovation Service Geneva Duty station: Geneva, Switzerland (HQ) Duration of the internship: Three months with possible extension Expected start date: ASAP Background information/Organizational Context The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was created in 1950, during the aftermath of the Second World War. Its mandate is defined by the 1950 UNHCR Statute. UNHCR works to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, war or disaster at home. UNHCR operates in 128 countries, with staff based in a mixture of regional and branch offices and sub and field offices. The UN Refugee Agency’s Innovation Service was established in 2012 to better capture, facilitate, and promote innovation further across the organization. The Innovation Service creates safe spaces for experimentation to take place in UNHCR’s operations, as well as at Headquarters, whilst instilling a future-oriented approach into how we solve problems and create impact for refugee communities. The Innovation Service believes diversity and inclusion are at the center of developing a more robust understanding of innovation that departs from tech-centric models that are often associated with new approaches to humanitarian aid. Through methodologies such as predictive analytics, building competencies of staff through the Innovation Fellowship programme, and experimenting with science-driven methodologies on how we communicate innovation, the team drives cultural and organizational change throughout UNHCR. The Innovation Service is now looking for a talented and enthusiastic Intern to support the Service through a strategy process. This is a unique opportunity to contribute and gain insight into UNHCR’s innovation and leadership work and humanitarian innovation more generally. The Intern will be part of a dynamic and geographically dispersed Innovation Service team. They will be based in Geneva, Switzerland, though interacting with team members in Nairobi, Budapest, and Panama. Duties and Responsibilities  Support the team with qualitative data collection and analysis. This may involve assisting in designing surveys; conducting (phone) interviews with programme participants and other stakeholders; transcribing; managing and analyzing data; Support in literature review and composing review summaries; Support meeting scheduling, and participation in meetings carrying out note taking and transcription, along with post meeting analysis;      Support the Innovation Service’s team in researching good practices external to UNHCR, as well as internally; Support drafting exercises, including the drafting of a strategy document together with other team members; Assist in other tasks to support the work of the team as required. This will involve some administration. Minimum qualifications required    University degree in social sciences or any related field; Fluency in English; Experience in undertaking qualitative data collection and understanding of data analysis;     Analytical, organizational and communication skills; Accuracy and attention to detail; Ability to deal well with ambiguity and adapt plans when needed to produce results; Ability to work independently in a multicultural environment with team members working in several geographical locations;  Knowledge of MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Eligibility To qualify for an internship with UNHCR, one of the following requirements must be met: a) Be a recent graduate* or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO; and b) Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of the Organization. An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship. * Recent graduates are to be considered those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying for an internship with UNHCR. Allowance Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
