Pesticides - an increasing challenge in drinking water treatment

Over many decades, pesticides from agriculture and household have infiltrated into the groundwater, thus contaminating an important fresh water eco-system. In Denmark, the groudwater reservoirs make up the entire source for drinking water. However, in recent years, pesticides and pesticide metabolites have been observed at an increasing rate, in concentrations above limit values and over a geographical large area. As a result, the production of clean drinking water is challenged.

In the next years, several Danish utilities are facing important adjustments in order to overcome this challenge. Abstraction wells are being closed down and/or relocated, and new treatment steps are being implemented at the waterworks. Different knowledge caps remain, in order to ensure a sustainable production of quality drinking water in the future:

  • Identifying the extent of the problem, the contaminants and the concentrations in groundwater,
  • Assessing the properties of the contaminants, and the available treamtent methods, and
  • Developing potential solutions to the problem, future aspects of drinking water treatment.

A project within this topic may include activities such as data analyses on groundwater contamination, literature review on pesticides and available treatment technologies, as well as conducting laboratory experiments.

Depending on the topic and focus, it will be possible to do a project in collaboration with a water utility company or a technilogy provider.
