Interaction between pathogens infection crickets: who paves the way for the other?
Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in 2020 commencing 1 April 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description
Crickets are emerging production animals in the food and feed industry. Fungi, bacteria and viruses can all cause disease in crickets resulting in a negative impact on insect production. The overall aim of this project is to elucidate how pathogens interact during co-infections and how co-infections affects cricket mortality and fitness. The specific aims are (1) to compare the effects of co-infections (bacteria-fungi, virus-fungi and bacteria-virus) on cricket mortality, growth, fecundity, feeding and behavior; (2) to evaluate synergistic versus antagonistic effects of pathogens on cricket fitness and (3) to evaluate how biotic or abiotic factors influence disease development and pathogen transmission.

Candidates should have a strong background in relevant subjects including entomology, microbiology or insect pathology, and they should have experience in conducting biological experiments.

Description of the scientific environment
The PhD position is part of the research group Insect pathology and biological control and is part of a joint doctoral program (double degree) between University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark and Wageningen University (WU), The Netherlands.

The PhD position you are applying for (ESR3) is part of a large Double Degree Programme called INSECT DOCTORS, funded by the European Commission. The overall aim of the INSECT DOCTORS’ training programme is to educate a new generation of scientist that have in-depth knowledge on insect pathogens, as well as the skills to assist the upcoming industry of insect mass rearing to prevent disease outbreaks in their insect cultures.

In total, 15 PhD positions are available in this programme, and each PhD candidate will be enrolled at two universities in different European countries. Each PhD candidate will have his/her own research project involving stays in at least two countries. Several novel PhD courses will be offered to all PhD candidates of INSECT DOCTORS. Start dates for all these PhD positions are scheduled for April/May 2020. To learn more about the training network please visit our website: www.insectdoctors.eu
