The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology is offering two postdoctoral positions within the development of chemical probes for investigating enzyme activity in the period from 1 march 2020 to 31 March 2022.

About us
The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology delivers research and teaching within a wide range of drug-related disciplines, spanning the molecular, cellular, and pharmacological levels. The department has approximately 300 employees. The position is within the research group of Professor Christian A. Olsen, which currently comprises about 12 members of various nationalities. With a foundation in chemical synthesis the Olsen laboratory seeks to explore the function of small molecules, peptides, peptidomimetics, and proteins in biological systems. We are focusing on peptidomimetic secondary structures with potential as antimicrobial agents, as non-proteinogenic ligands for disruption of protein–protein interactions, and for multivalent display. We are also exploring naturally occurring macrocyclic peptides and analogues thereof for development of class- or isoform-selective HDAC inhibitors and quorum sensing modulators, as well as investigating substrate-specificity of the human lysine deacylase enzymes using chemical biology tools.

Project description
Recently, enzymes formerly thought to be protein lysine deacetylases, have now been shown to target different types of lysine modifications including succinyl, glutaryl, and myristoyl. A certain type of hydrolases in human cells, called sirtuins, have been shown to target these modifications, and based on this knowledge, the objective of the current project is to design novel photo cross-linking probes for investigation of sirtuin enzymes. The tasks during this project will thus include chemical synthesis, compound characterization, enzymatic inhibition profiling, and cell culture work. In this interdisciplinary way, we will evaluate dependence of various regulatory mechanisms on post-translational acylation of lysine residues.

Your qualifications
As an applicant you must have:

  • Obtained a PhD degree in organic chemistry or chemical biology prior to the starting date
  • Fluency in English and excellent communication skills

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong background in organic synthesis and experimental biochemical methods. The applicant should also have a strong track record for scientific communication in international peer-reviewed journals, and preferable demonstrated the ability to secure external funding.

We can offer

  • A strong scientific environment in a friendly atmosphere
  • Great opportunities for professional and personal development
  • A workplace in the beautiful city of Copenhagen with benefits as for example fruit and exercise breaks

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is [a full time and fixed-term position for two years and one month. Starting date is 1 March 2020 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at 34,360 DKK/ approx. 4,590 Euro (October 2019-level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.
