Two-year research assistant position in remote sensing, GIS and data handling

Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, is looking for a research assistant, who can participate in tasks related to environmental assessment of mineral resource exploration in Greenland, including spatial analysis of land areas in West Greenland and validation/processing of data in environmental databases.

The position
The applicant will be part of a project that aims at providing data for strategic environmental impact assessment of potential areas for mineral resource extraction. This involves combining existing knowledge about the distribution of flora and fauna, geochemistry, and land use (hunting, fishing, leisure activities, tourism, archaeology, etc.) with mapping of vegetation patterns, moisture conditions, terrain etc. based on Remote Sensing and GIS. The applicant will also be tasked with validation and processing of data in the Department's relational databases with environmental data from Greenland. It is expected that the applicant has experience with remote sensing and GIS, and can contribute to the Department's further integration of GIS and remote sensing data.

You have solid experience with relevant software for the analysis of spatial data (ENVI, ArcGIS, etc.), and software for handling data in relational databases (e.g. Microsoft SQL-server, Access, Excel). It is also assumed that you have experience with and wants to be included in an interdisciplinary team, and that you have good writing skills in both Danish and English. Your educational background could be geography/geo informatics, biology, engineering or the like. Knowledge about Greenland is an advantage.

The Department
You will be placed in the section for Arctic Environment in Roskilde. The section collaborates closely with the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources and focusses on research and consultancy on how to minimize the effect of mineral resource activities and other physical disturbances on the environment in Greenland. Department of Bioscience has around 500 employees and carry out teaching, basic research, strategic research and research-based public sector environmental consultancy and advisory work. Our vision is to develop a globally leading research unit within biology.

Application procedure
Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Science and Technology refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
