We’re looking for an enthusiastic and trusted HSE professional to join us

This is your opportunity to contribute to our Safety Excellence Programme and ensure that Hempel is a safe place to work by providing technical support to our HSE policies and standards. You’ll also be working together with employees and their managers of different functions with the aim to increase their safety awareness while guaranteeing the compliance of the Health, Safety and Environment local and Group legislation.

As part of this team, you’ll be actively involved in the implementation of internal and external HSE regulations, and thereby ensure that we are following our local legislation and company guidelines. You’ll have a critical role in making safety measures comprehensible and followed by everyone.

We’re looking for a HSE team player

Our ideal candidate will come from an international industrial or chemical environment, who has previously dealt with ensuring HSE awareness and who has a proven capacity to adapt the communication style to different audiences.

This role requires a precise and structured mindset, the ability to anticipate the implications and consequences of multiple scenarios, as well as a good knowledge of the local safety and environmental legislation.

Here’s some of the other things you can look forward to:

  • Work in the field at an operational level, carry out the day to day operations of HSE department and contribute to the application of effective Health, Safety and Environmental management by providing technical support;
  • Perform PPE management – Procurement, evaluate the specifications, distribution, awareness and ensure proper use and maintenance;
  • Organising and conducting HSE awareness information/training for employees;
  • Perform regular safety inspections (Identify unsafe conditions ) with records, and make sure that the defined actions are implemented;
  • Perform evaluation of occupational hazards and risk assessment;
  • Ability to oversee Hazardous and non- Hazardous Waste Storage area and ensure regulatory compliance i.e. labelling, containment, segregation, proper disposal, documentation, etc.;
  • Assist on the water consumption reports;
  • Assist on the Monitoring of Waste Water Treatment Plant
  • Ensuring emergency Preparedness /Response in the field;
  • Ability to work with employees and achieve cultural change in the face of potential resistance
  • Control/Assist in Health management - Occupational medicine/Health
  • Actively participating in incident prevention (Near Misses, Incidents investigation), including safety risk assessment from a problem solving perspective, for the benefit of employees and visitors. You’ll also analyse and report trends and facts in relation to accidents;
  • Identifying HSE requirements for external contractors/ workers and guarantee that all the defined documents and registrations are in place e.g. Control of Work Permits – Contractors
  • Assist in the development, evaluation and upgrading of HSE programs
  • Maintain HSE files and records.
  • Assist 6S projects
  • Perform other work related tasks as required as assigned

You should also have the following qualifications and skills:

  • HSE training education as required by the local legislation (Technical Health and Safety at Work – CAP 4 minimum)
  • Degree in Chemical and/or Engineering (not mandatory) or equivalent work experience
  • Good knowledge of the local safety and environmental legislation
  • Knowledge of ATEX. Seveso will be also a plus
  • 2 to 3 years of experience as health and safety technician
  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal relationships, and teamwork;
  • Driven to accomplish results;
  • Strong sense of responsibility, autonomy and initiative;
  • Good knowledge of computer tools;
  • Innovative and proactive spirit.
  • Ability to communicate in English and Portuguese.
