Endocrinology and neurology Impaired Quality of Life and cognitive function in patients with hypoparathyroidism might be explained by disturbed capillary flow patterns in the brain Previous studies have shown that patients with hypoparathyroidism have a reduced quality of life and it has been speculated whether they also have a mild cognitive impairment. The reason for these complications is not fully elucidated; it could be the insufficient levels of PTH, episodes of hypo- or hypercalcaemia, or maybe the risk of intracerebral calcifications. A new idea is that since the pericytes and osteoblasts develops from the same mesenchymal stem cells. There might also be an effect of the absent PTH and/or the disturbance in calcium levels on the capillary pericytes. The hypothesis behind the study is that the impaired quality of life and cognitive function can be explained by a disturbed capillary flow pattern in the brain, which can be quantified by MRI scans. In this study we aim to investigate this further by performing MRI scans, cognitive testing and biochemical markers in 25 patients with post-surgical hypoparathyroidism, 25 healthy age, gender and educational matched controls, moreover 15 patients with non-surgical and pseudo hypoparathyroidism will be included. The study will be performed in close relationship with the Department of Neuroradiology. The study is investigator initiated. The project is fully funded including salary for a research year student. Time schedule: Application for a research year the 16th of Oct. 2018 with study start the st 1 of Feb. 2019 Contact: Tanja Sikjær, MD, PhD, Department of Endocrinology and Internal Medicine, DoH, Aarhus University Hospital, Palle Juul Jensens Boulevard 99, Entrance J, J112.
