The Department of English, German and Romance Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen Denmark, invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position to be filled by 1 April 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Hernando Colón’s Book of Books
Last year a remarkable discovery was made at the University of Copenhagen’s Arnamagnæan Institute, when one of the manuscripts in the collection was positively identified as El libro de los epítomes, one of the principal bibliographical tools from the library of Hernando Colón (1488-1539), son of the navigator Christopher Columbus. Long believed to be missing, the book’s discovery has been hailed as one of the most exciting developments in early modern book history for decades, and the University of Copenhagen has therefore decided to launch a three-year research project focusing on this remarkable book. Funding for the project is provided by the Carlsberg Foundation. The Principal Investigator is Professor Matthew Driscoll of the Arnamagnæan Institute, who will oversee the production of an edition and translation of the Libro, both in digital and print form, while the Co-PI, Morten Heiberg, Professor of Spanish History at the Department of English, Germanic and Romance Studies, will take responsibility for linking Colón’s universal library project to the broader currents of biblio- and sociohistorical study and Hispano-Danish relations in the early modern period.

Job content
Professor Morten Heiberg seeks to fill one two-year position in the Spanish Department for a postdoc with the purpose of investigating how this unique book and other Spanish manuscripts wound up in Denmark and incorporate this knowledge into a broader understanding of Danish-Spanish relations in the 17th century.

Qualification requirements
We are looking for a candidate who already holds, or is about to complete, a PhD in early modern, Iberian or Scandinavian history or a related subject. The candidate should demonstrate a strong interest in diplomatic, cultural and/or book history of either Spain or Denmark in the 16th and 17th century and have experience in conducting research on manuscripts and early printed books in archives and special collections libraries. Crucially, the candidate should possess outstanding language (reading) skills: Danish, German, Latin and Spanish are compulsory, as is the ability to read older texts (Gothic script). A good knowledge of other Romance languages, especially French and Italian, would also be an advantage. The working language of the project is English, in which fluency is therefore also required.

For further information about the position, please contact professor Morten Heiberg, dmg853@hum.ku.dk.
