We are looking for a skilled engineer with academic and practical experience in optics, specifically high-power lasers and high-speed cameras. Basic understanding or experience with (turbulent) flow measurements is an advantage. The position is available at DTU Mechanical Engineering.

The job
The applicant will be part of a team that services the whole department with technical support of many different areas. The applicant will be allocated mainly to the team that performs and analyses sophisticated optical measurements of fundamental turbulent flows but will also be asked to support other projects at the Department with various kinds of optics related projects.

Specifically, the applicant will be responsible for the laboratory facilities of the DTU Turbulence Research Laboratory group including maintenance, procurement and contact with suppliers. The applicant will also be active in establishing, executing and improving the design of the experiments, including Particle Image/Tracking Velocimetry experiments. The applicant is expected to work independently. Besides aiding in the practical experimental work, the candidate is encouraged to contribute to disseminating his/her results in research journals.

Primary areas of responsibility:

  • Overall responsibility for the maintenance, development and improvement of the experimental facilities of the DTU Turbulence Research Laboratory.
  • Plan and conduct particle imaging based experiments and other kinds of measurements and visualizations in turbulent flows.
  • Support in other tasks of relevance at the department.
  • Writing reports and contributing to scientific papers (if relevant).

Our expectations of you
Apart from being able to independently carry out the above listed tasks, the applicant is expected to have a solid academic understanding and practical experience with Optics (in general), High-power lasers, Gaussian beam optics and alternative illumination sources such as LED High-speed cameras.

Other competences highly beneficial for the position include:

  • Programming
  • Signal processing (specifically in aspects related to optics and waves)
  • Experience with conducting fluid mechanical experiments in general and particle based imaging methods specifically
  • Enthusiasm for working with fundamental and applied problems in mechanical engineering/physics.
  • Well established team-player skills.
  • Ability to manage time spent on various tasks and to work in different projects in parallel.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

DTU Mechanical Engineering covers the fundamental engineering disciplines within Solid mechanics, Fluid mechanics, Coastal and Maritime Engineering, Energy systems and energy conversion, Materials and Surface Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering design and Product development.
