Øresundsregionen

Background
Advanced mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics is a key method in modern life sciences. The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center of Protein Research (CPR), located at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, is among the world-leading institutes for this technology, hosting four different research groups focusing on its development and application to fundamental and clinical research.
In addition, the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences is currently establishing a new top-quality service facility for MS-based proteomics – The Proteome Research Infrastructure (PRI) - that provides the technology to both academic and industry users of the Copenhagen area and beyond.

To support and maintain the mass spectrometry (MS) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) instrumentation at CPR and PRI, we are searching for two qualified Mass Spectrometry Specialists.

The proteomic platforms of CPR and PRI will be closely associated in the same building guaranteeing seamless exchange of personnel, material and lively scientific communication. The research environment at CPR and PRI is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with many different nationalities represented.

Duration: The positions are temporary and for a period of two years.

Job description and qualifications
The selected candidates are expected to work as a team member to provide mass spectrometry equipment support and expertise for maintaining and developing the MS instrument park at the highest international level. Together the CPR and PRI will host up to 16 high-end UHPLC-MS setups of the newest generation. All instruments are used in a 24-7 mode of operation.

The selected candidates will receive training and support from the existing MS specialists at the CPR proteomics platform and will directly refer to either the CPR platform leader or PRI director, who can prioritize among the listed tasks when necessary. The working language is English.

Main tasks
The Mass Spectrometry Engineer will perform or overseeon-site repair, maintenance, qualification, and validation of advanced mass spectrometers coupled to upstream peptide separation by liquid chromatography.

  • Disassembling and cleaning of instruments.
  • Ordering spare-parts and changing instrumental components such as electronic boards and critical mechanical parts of the instrument.
  • Analysis of technical problems and recommendation of modifications to eliminate future problems.
  • Problem resolution with instrument manufacturers’ customer service, or other personnel to expedite repairs.
  • Performance assessment of the mass spectrometric equipment including the use of automated IT scripts, documentation, and evaluation of necessity for cleaning.
  • Train and assist individual users when performing troubleshooting and weekly MS maintenance.
  • Maintenance and support of mass-spectrometric IT-systems and data back-up solutions.

Qualifications
We expect candidates with various technical, engineering or analytical educational backgrounds to apply. The practical and technical experience of the applicants will be one of the main criteria. The ideal candidate should fulfil following qualifications:

  • Confidence of manipulating expensive instrumentation.
  • Good skills in assembling machines.
  • Basic knowledge in electronic engineering.
  • Service-minded personality and team player.
  • Good communication skills, fluent in English language.

Following qualifications are not required, but will be regarded as distinct advantages:

  • Prior experience with technical or engineering support in mass spectrometry-based techniques.
  • Detailed knowledge and knowhow about repairing, maintaining and troubleshooting Orbitrap and/or TIMS-TOF mass spectrometric instrumentation.
  • Experience in MS method development and spectral analysis.

Terms of employment
The positions are temporary and for a period of two years and the working hours are 37 hours per week.
The position as Mass Spectrometry Specialist will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and PROSA (association for organized IT Professionals) in salary group 3.1. or in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
