The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position to join the project “Towards Integrated Nano-Magnetics for High Frequency Power Supplies (HiFMag)” supported by the Danish Council for Independent Research within the Electronics group (ELE).

Today magnetic components such as inductors and transformers of power supplies are large compared to other electronic components. The challenge in realizing smaller, faster and in turn greener power supplies – e.g. for cell phone chargers - is integration of magnetic materials that can operate efficiently in the components at high frequencies (>10 MHz, to be used in switch mode power supplies).

The HiFMag project aims at designing and integrating new magnetic materials - with low power losses and high permeability at high frequencies - into microfabricated chips of lithographically patterned coils and circuits. For this, we combine expertise at DTU (Physics, Nanolab, and Elektro) on magnetism, microfabrication and electrical engineering.

Responsibilities and tasks
As a PhD student, you will contribute to designing and optimizing inductors as well as power converters. Your tasks include design of circuits and magnetic components (shape, dimension, coil…), as well as measurements and tests. During the project, you will collaborate closely with the other HiFMag team members in order to fabricate the inductors and integrated power converter prototypes in DTU Nanolab clean-room.

The PhD project will be supervised by Associate Professor Ziwei Ouyang from DTU Elektro and co-supervised by Professor Cathrine Frandsen from DTU Physics, Associate Professor Marco Beleggia and Deputy Director Anders Michael Jørgensen from DTU Nanolab.

Most of the PhD project will be carried out at DTU campus in Lyngby. The project additionally includes a 3-6 month external stay at the power electronics research center PERC at National University of Ireland, where the candidate will extend his/her work on the design of the coupled inductors as well as core loss measurements in collaboration with Centre Director Dr. Maeve Duffy.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree with outstanding results.

Your technical background includes:

  • a good grasp of analysis and synthesis of all kinds of power circuit topologies;
  • good experience in magnetic components (inductors and transformers) design, modelling, and optimization;
  • familiarity with the characteristics and use of GaN devices within high frequency power electronics applications;
  • good experience in using PCB layout software;
  • familiarity with simulation tools such as ANSYS, LTspice, PSIM etc.;
  • good experience in making laboratory prototypes, debugging and testing power electronic circuits.

You are hard-working and have a keen interest in research and innovation.

You are motivated by problem solving, are creative by mind, able to think out of the box, and have the drive to try to push the limits of what can be done.

It is important that you are able to work both independently and in a team. HiFMag is a team effort and you will be working closely with the other HiFMag team members from other disciplines. Additional background within physics and materials will be a clear advantage.

Excellent written and spoken English skills are mandatory.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
