You will be in the forefront of the further development of a highly professional and ambitious department with dedicated staff members with the meaningful task to carry out assignments for the state forensic pathologist as part of its research-based public-sector consultancy services for police districts. You will work closely and trust-based with your colleagues at Aarhus University. Together your goal is to ensure that it will remain a hub for renowned forensic medicine research and teaching.

You will be a part of the faculty’s senior management team where we promote an open, inclusive and trustful work environment. In collaboration with the four other Heads of Departments and the Dean’s Office, you share the ambition to further develop Aarhus University as an internationally acclaimed elite university that contributes to solving fundamental challenges in society. Our current major focus areas include recruitment and career development, diversity and internationalisation, external funding of new initiatives and implementation of the faculty’s visions for restructured educational programmes.

You show the path for world-class forensic research and public-sector consultancy services
As the Head of Department, you are responsible for the academic, financial and people management of the Department.

Your main tasks include:

  • Lead the way together with the Department’s people managers on people management, including leadership, work environment, personnel matters, recruitment, onboarding and competency and career development.
  • Work strategically with the Department’s senior scientific staff and research groups on funding, recruitment and internationalization to strengthen the impact of research and education.
  • Strengthen and maintain the framework for creative and inspirational research environments with extensive diversity and international impact.
  • Be responsible for and ensure availability of the Department for requested forensic assignments, services and consultancy for public authorities, in particular the Danish judicial system.
  • Map out the Department’s profile and future strategic objectives and prioritize accordingly.
  • Promote collaborations with the faculty’s and the University’s research communities.
  • Support a healthy culture of collaboration within which all staff members may develop and thrive. You will be in charge of the Department’s working environment.
  • Work to strengthen the Department's profile as a workplace with a meaningful and inspiring research-based environment that attracts the very best employees at national and international level.
  • Build bridges to partners, the business community, government agencies and private foundations with a view to increasing innovation and value creation for all parties.
  • Ensure financial management and budget compliance in a complex organisation, where professional activities are often funded by several sources.
  • Be involved in the public debate on behalf of the Department, and communicate in a clear, comprehensible and inspiring manner.

Visible leader and experienced researcher
You have experience as a researcher within the Department’s academic areas. You are open, curious and approachable, and can fill a visible leadership position with people management responsibility. You either hold experience with or wish to develop further your leadership potential within managerial and financial management, including facilitation of external funding. You think strategic and realistically back up initiatives that further the development of the Department’s research, teaching and public-sector consultancy services activities.

You are visionary, innovative and committed, and believe in the value of promoting cultural and gender diversity. You can communicate clearly and constructively in verbal and written English, and preferably at least one of the Scandinavian languages. You have experience from working in academic and political fora at universities and/or in the healthcare system.

About the Department of Forensic Medicine
The department employs 70 employees, of which 35 have an academic background, while eight are tenured academic staff. Our mission is to contribute to the prevention of crime, accidents, premature deaths and suicides through research, education and forensic investigations. As an employee at the department, we expect that you contribute to achieving this goal. The department comprises two sections providing commissioned work for the Danish National Police.

The Section of Forensic Chemistry conducts quantitative and screening analysis for illegal and legal drugs and their metabolites in human biological samples as well as non-biological samples (police seizures). The Section of Forensic Pathology performs autopsies, crime scene investigations and clinical forensic examinations. Both sections hold either ISO 17025 or ISO 17020 quality standard accreditations. Apart from the commissioned work, the department has three research units, which focus on bioanalytical chemistry, forensic imaging and clinical forensic medicine.

Appointment procedure
The position is a fixed-term employment for a period of up to six years with the option to extend the period for an additional three years. We offer assistance to relocate your family, if relevant.

The appointment procedure entails setting up an advisory group and an appointment committee.

Interviews are expected to be held week 18-19 2020 (1st round) and week 20-21 2020 (2nd round). Applicants who successfully conclude the first round must participate in manager profile testing after the first round of interviews.

Terms of employment
Terms of employment and pay are regulated by the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.
