Vice President, Research & Development Operations

The Role

This is a unique opportunity to join Genmab as VP R&D and support the business in becoming a fully integrated biotech company.

The VP R&D Operations at Genmab ensures cost effective, efficient and high-quality R&D operations, processes, and procedures to help deliver on all R&D goals and objectives. The VP R&D Operations will be responsible for processes, continuous process improvement, and resource allocation to ensure capabilities are adequate to meet the current pipeline objectives for R&D, and to meet future growth. The VP R&D Operations will secure the functionality of the R&D business to drive extensive and sustainable growth.

The VP R&D Operations reports to the CDO in US.


  • Design and implement cohesive, end-to-end R&D operations strategies, plans and procedures to attain short and long-term operational goals aligned with financial targets. Spearhead the development, implementation and communication of effective strategies and processes to support pipeline objectives
  • Set comprehensive, agile, lean, and consistent processes to support R&D activities
  • Work closely with functional R&D departments to establish the key operational needs to help deliver business objectives, and to integrate cross-functional processes and procedures to seamlessly support the R&D organization
  • Oversee daily operations of R&D:
    • Break down functional/organizational barriers to enhance interactions and improve coordination internally
    • Partner with all line functional heads to identify opportunities to improve standards
    • Ensure processes and procedures are aligned across R&D functions to support smooth functioning
    • Identify and propose actions to resolve inter departmental misalignments
    • Ensure processes are in line with current standards (ICH, GCP, GMP, GGO, ARBO, animal by-products, GXP, animal laboratory guidelines)
    • Oversee that Safety and security processes are in place (work and lab environment)
    • Ensure internal R&D SOPs follow external legal requirements (by close partnership and integration with the legal team)
    • Coordinate with line function heads for department targets and budget/resource requirements
  • In collaboration with department heads, HR Business Partner(s), and Operations & Resource Managers, oversee appropriate staffing to achieve functional goals
  • Provide research and product development capabilities by ensuring that efficient and reliable execution of R&D work packages are on time and in budget
  • Ensure high quality and strategic outsourcing for R&D, including contract management/purchase and procurement processes for all R&D functions
  • Contribute to improve partnerships with strategic CRO or CMO partners/vendors
  • Contribute to the optimization of processes for CRO/CMO vendor management
  • Ensure end to end smooth Contract management process (Contract generation, approvals, Working Orders, Payments, etc.)
  • Responsible for the measurement and effectiveness of all internal and outsourced processes. Provide timely, accurate and complete reports on the operating condition of R&D and responsible for continual improvement as needed
  • Ensure and coordinate best practices sharing across functions
  • Key member of R&D management team
  • Contributes to prioritization and implementation plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and personnel to accommodate the rapid growth objectives of the organization
  • Implement appropriate strategies for employee motivation and retention
  • Contribute to creating and communicating an employment culture in line with Genmab’s values with the goal to attract, retain and develop highly talented and dedicated people
  • Lead employees to encourage maximum performance and dedication. Build a great working environment for employees
  • Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the company


  • You hold a Master’s degree In a natural science subject, preferably a PhD
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant end-to-end experience in Research & Clinical Development within the Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry
  • People management experience required
  • Strong strategic skills including the ability to make complex decisions and willingness to support difficult positions
  • Ability to work well within cross-functional teams
  • Strong communication skills – both oral and written
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to use appropriate styles to lead, focus, negotiate, influence and resolve conflict.
