One Principal Viola to the Danish National Symphony Orchestra

This is one of two Principal Viola positions in the orchestra. The Viola section consists of two principal players with obligation to play assistant principal, one assistant principal player with obligation to play tutti and 10 tutti players.

are pleased to invite applications for the following position:

One Principal Viola

This is a permanent, full time position with a one-year trial period.

Auditions will be held for one Principal Viola position. The viola section consists of two principal players with obligation to play assistant principal, one assistant principal player with obligation to play tutti, and 10 tutti players.

The Danish National Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s oldest broadcasting symphony orchestras and is part of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation - a leading producer of culture, regionally, nationally and internationally.

The Corporation includes 5 ensembles – a symphony orchestra, choirs and a big band - and as such is an important ambassador for Danish music and culture abroad.

The Danish Symphony Orchestra continuously collaborates with the world's leading soloists and conductors. In addition to the prestigious lineup of titled artists, internationally acclaimed conductors such as Gianandrea Noseda, Vasily Petrenko, Lorenzo Viotti and Juanjo Mena have conducted the orchestra to great critical acclaim. Maestro Herbert Blomstedt and Thomas Dausgaard are both appointed Conductors’ Laureate of the orchestra. Maestro Fabio Luisi was appointed as Chief Conductor in 2017.

The DR Concert Hall is designed by French architect Jean Nouvel with acoustics by Yasuhisa Toyota and has been rated one of the world’s best concert halls by ‘Gramophone’. Most of the orchestra’s concerts are broadcast on Danish Radio and to many regions of the world through the European Broadcasting Union.

The audition will take place on:

Saturday August 22, 2020 from 10:00 AM (Preliminary round)

Sunday August 23, 2020 from 10:00 AM (1st & 2nd rounds)

Monday August 24, 2020 from 10:00 - 11:30 AM (Final round with the orchestra)

Candidates are kindly asked to prepare the following repertoire:

Preliminary & 1st round:

Stamitz 1st Viola concerto, or Hoffmeister Viola concerto, 1st and 2nd Movement. Cadenza only in the 1st movement.

Orchestral excerpts

2nd round A:

Bartok or Walton Viola concertos (1st Movement), or Hindemith” Der Schwanendreher”.

Orchestral Excerpts

2nd round B:

Candidates will lead a rehearsal with the section (repertoire TBA)

3rd Round:

Orchestral Excerpts with the Orchestra

(All excerpts will be sent by email before the audition. First time to all applicants, who applied for the position latest on July 15, 2020. Second time on August 10, 2020 for all applications later than July 15, 2020.)

Working in the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and in Denmark

The orchestra's work schedule is based on 24 hours a week plus 15 hours individual preparation, 42 weeks per year. Normally rehearsals are held Monday to Friday with concerts twice a week. Domestic and international touring is also a contractual obligation.

The orchestra is located at DR Byen in a smoke-free indoor environment, with good practice and work facilities, access to fitness facilities and a subway station close by.

Annual salary:

DKK 431,000-525,600 plus pension paid monthly over 12 months. Additional benefits include paid vacation and an extensive public health care system as well as instrument maintenance and insurance

Employment is subject to confirmation of residence and work permit in Denmark.
