Postdoc in Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation

Transcranial Ultrasound Stimulation (TUS) is emerging as new non-invasive brain stimulation method that can achieve a highly focused stimulation also of deeper brain areas. By that, it offers unique new prospects for the treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases. Controlling the strength and spatial distribution of the ultrasound stimulation pattern in the brain is central to ensure that the waves have the desired effects on brain physiology while being safe.

Dose control for TUS is very challenging because the waves are strongly affected by the human skull, which has rather complex and inhomogeneous acoustic properties. Leveraging our outstanding expertize in automated head modeling and dose control for established brain stimulation methods (www.simnibs.org), we will develop new methods for the individualized modeling of the acoustic human skull properties from computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance images (MRI) and calibration measurements. Our aim is to provide more accurate and robust dosing methods that will be a cornerstone for clinically effective and safe TUS applications.

Responsibilities and tasks
Our aim is the robust control of the TUS dose in the human brain. We have ideas for how these goals can be achieved, but we need your help in the methods development, experimental validation and publishing the results. You will be the daily responsible for the project, and will work in close collaboration with a PostDoc who is familiar with the practical aspects of ultrasound measurements. You will be embedded in a group of researchers being experts in medical image segmentation, dose control and MR physics, particularly Assoc. Profs. Axel Thielscher and Lars G. Hanson. Parts of the project will be performed in collaboration with Bradley Treeby (Biomedical Ultrasound Group, UCL).

Your tasks include optimization of the MR-based estimation of acoustic skull properties and the design and initial validation of methods to improve the acoustic property estimates using data from non-invasive calibration measurements. Simultaneously, you will advance your scientific career by learning and developing new techniques and publishing the results.

Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills. In addition, we expect you to be interested in collaboration and take personal responsibility for your work. We offer substantial academic sparring in an informal atmosphere.

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. A strong background in ultrasound physics and ultrasound simulations is required. Good programming knowledge, in particular in Matlab or Python are desired. Prior experience with CT and MRI data are advantageous, but not essential.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The project including your 2-year employment is mainly funded by the Lundbeck Foundation. The project is conducted in collaboration with the Danish Research Centre for Magnetic Resonance (www.drcmr.dk/) located at Copenhagen University Hospital Hvidovre, Denmark, where experimental data will be acquired.

The employment and primary activity will be at the Neurophysics group of the Center for Magnetic Resonance, Department of Health Technology at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby, just North of Copenhagen that is characterized by a very international atmosphere and is globally recognized as a very attractive site for settling.
