A unique opportunity to learn and support Danish Red Cross’ work in Kenya

Are you interested in international development and looking for experience within the humanitarian sector? Do you want to support projects focusing on emergency response and preparedness, community resilience, youth, health or disaster management? Do you have good reporting and communication skills, and are you ready to move to Nairobi and get an insight into the work of the Red Cross Movement? If yes, then you might be our new Programme Management Intern.

DRC in Kenya
The Danish Red Cross Country Office for Kenya is located in Nairobi. We work closely with the Kenya Red Cross through a mutually benefiting long-term partnership focusing largely in community resilience building, Health (with a strong focus on Non-communicable diseases), innovation, youth, Mental Health and psychosocial support and emergency response operations support to the National Society. As an intern you will be supporting these ongoing programmes and get a unique insight into the humanitarian sector and long-term development work of Danish Red Cross in Kenya.

Your tasks
As an intern you will support the work at the Country Office and the Danish Red Cross’ overall response in Kenya. This will include:

- Support in setting up new projects

- Support in follow up of specific programme management tasks

- Support in drafting project agreements/addendums

- Support in drafting/reviewing project descriptions and budgets

- Support in reporting/reviewing reports/follow up of reports due/filling reports

- Support day to day activities at Country Office

- Participate in relevant project monitoring field visits.

- Participate in relevant meetings and workshops with the National Society

You will learn about the work of Danish Red Cross in Kenya and receive ongoing supervision and support by the Country Manager and country staff.

We expect
We expect you to work independently, be action driven and effective. You are resourceful, interested in humanitarian development and want to be part of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, and are engaging and flexible. It is an advantage if you have previous experience working in an international humanitarian organization.

The professional and academic background needed for the internships are:

  • Enrollment in relevant university education, e.g. social science, political science, African studies, development studies or similar and able to provide an Intern contract with a university.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian work
  • Experience from working, studying or living abroad
  • Knowledge of the Red Cross Movement is an advantage
  • Fluency in both Danish and English is a necessity
  • Can provide an intern agreement with a university

As a person, you are result oriented with a cultural sensitivity. You have an ability to both listen and facilitate dialogues with a flexible approach, adapting your way of working depending on the culture and capacities.

We offer
As an intern with the Danish Red Cross in Africa, you will get a chance to gain first-hand experience of what it is like to work for the world’s largest humanitarian organization. You will get to work alongside humanitarian professionals in a dynamic office. The internship will provide you with an opportunity to apply what you have learned during your studies in a challenging and inspiring setting.

The internships begin in February 2021 and end in July 2021 and run for approximately 6 months. The internship is unpaid. However, accommodation and insurance are covered by the Danish Red Cross. Before arriving at the internship, you will have a briefing at the Danish Red Cross Headquarters in Denmark.

Please notice that position is manly an office job with few visits to the field.
