PhD fellow in molecular biology

Københavns Universitet (KU)

The Department of Biology, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen, is offering a PhD scholarship in the field of post-transcriptional gene regulation in plants. The expected starting date is 1 October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The Department of Biology undertakes teaching and research within a wide spectrum of biological disciplines. The host lab is part of the Section for Computational and RNA Biology that houses nine research groups with diverse interests of which five have a main focus on gene expression research through the use of combined experimental and computational approaches.

Project description
The project aims to decipher the molecular mechanisms by which N6-methyladenosine-binding proteins of the YTHDF family regulate genes in plants. The host lab is leading in this field, and has set up a series of powerful genetic and biochemical systems suitable for the functional characterization of YTHDF-family proteins in Arabidopsis (Arribas-Hernández et al., 2018, Plant Cell 30, 952-967; Arribas-Hernández et al., 2020, Development: doi: 10.1242/dev.189134 Published 1 July 2020). The project will employ a mix of experimental approaches, including immunoprecipitation-mass spectrometry screens, forward genetic screening, CRISPR-Cas genome engineering, and high-throughput-sequencing-based methods for characterization of protein-mRNA binding in vivo.
