Associate Professorship in Statistical Demography with a focus on forecasting

Syddansk Universitet (SDU)

The Danish Centre for Demographic Research invites applications for an associate professorship as of January 1th 2021 or soon thereafter.

The selected candidate should have expertise in statistical demography and mortality forecasting; an interest in the study of lifespan inequalities is desirable.

The Centre is part of the University of Southern Denmark’s Faculty of Business and Social Sciences; it is the coordinating partner in an interfaculty research collaboration, which includes researchers in Health Sciences, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and the Humanities. The selected candidate will work with this cross-faculty team.

One of the prime directions of the Centre’s research is ageing in modern societies and its diverse implications. We study patterns of changing mortality and morbidity, mostly in human populations but also in some nonhuman species. We maintain a strong and unique profile in analytical demography and are expanding to more application-oriented research.

Our research helps societies to build sustainable and efficient pension systems. For such systems to be also fair, they should take account of and forecast lifespan differences between sub-groups in society. We also help health care planners to forecast demand for medical and social care in differently aging sub-populations, together with labour supply, housing demands, etc. Everything relies on detailed and accurate demographic forecasts.

The centre is one of the leading teams in the world on demographic modelling and forecasting. The new Associate Professor is expected to contribute to this research and help us become even stronger. Much of our research is financed by large external grants; our new colleague is expected to work on these as well as developing her or his own projects.
