Københavns Universitet (KU)

Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen
The Hickson laboratory in the Center for Chromosome Stability (www.ccs.ku.dk) at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (www.icmm.ku.dk) , University of Copenhagen, is seeking a Research Assistant. The CCS is a center of excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The successful applicant will join a group of ambitious and dedicated scientists studying the mechanisms by which chromosomal instability drives human disease.

Our group and research
The Hickson laboratory undertakes research projects aimed at understanding how human cells maintain a stable genome. As well as conventional protein biochemistry, the group utilizes optical tweezers coupled with fluorescence microscopy to study dynamic events during the manipulation of DNA structure by DNA translocases and topoisomerases.

Start date: 15 October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter
Duration:2 years
Weekly working hours: 37

The Department
The Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine focuses on basic cellular and molecular biological processes, their regulation and their significance for cell function, interaction and organisation in tissues. The Department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate teaching programs spanning cell biology, genetics and basic human biology, including chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, as well as anatomy.

You can read more about the department at www.icmm.ku.dk

The post-holder will be offered an opportunity in teacher training at the level of first year cell and molecular biology exercises under supervision, provided by the department.

Responsibilities and tasks
The post-holder will join a team within the laboratory that uses protein biochemistry to study DNA-protein interactions. A key role of the post-holder will be to express and purify proteins and characterize their enzymatic activities.

The research assistant will also have opportunities to work in close collaboration with different researchers within the group at various stages of their research as the need arises.

Key criteria for the assessment of applicants
