Postdoc position in Neolithic archaeology at the section of Archaeology

The Saxo Institute offers a postdoc position in north-west European Neolithic Archaeology

We are offering a 3½-year postdoc position for a candidate with a PhD in the Neolithic of north-west Europe and with knowledge of Danish (or Swedish or Norwegian). The position is available from 1 January 2021 and is funded by the research project Deep histories of migration: the early Neolithic around the North Sea financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (IRFD). In accordance with IRFD guidelines, postdoctoral candidates must have obtained their PhD within the last four years (counted from 1 October 2019) excluding leaves of absence.

The aim of the project is to uncover the longer-term impact of migration, which includes the relationship between different forms of contact and material culture change. The project will focus on the long-term networks and connections between Denmark, Britain and Ireland and reveal how these connections developed and changed from the start of the Neolithic (c. 4000 BC) over the following centuries up until c. 3300 BC.

The successful candidate will be part of a small international research group consisting of the PI and two co-PI’s and will be based at the Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen, under supervision of PI Rune Iversen. The employment includes an extended research stay (16 months) at the University of Central Lancashire (UK) under the supervision of co-PI Vicki Cummings.

Job description

The postdoc will focus on data collection throughout years one and two. Year three will be dedicated to analysis and initial results to be presented in a final monograph (write up in year four). The data collection centres on seven selected micro-regions within Denmark, Britain and Ireland including: Northern Jutland, Funen, West Wales, north-western Ireland, central-eastern Ireland, central-western Ireland and south-eastern England. The data collection will focus on two key pieces of evidence: monuments and structured deposits. The main task will be to collect and record the relevant data in a custom-made database and then perform a detailed network analysis coupled to GIS in order to investigate similarities and differences in material culture.

The selected candidate is expected to contribute substantially to publications in the research group, oral dissemination of results and to the organization of an international conference to be held at the University of Copenhagen.

Qualification requirements

In order to be considered for the position, applicants must have research qualifications at least corresponding to what can be achieved as part of a successfully completed PhD and must be able to read Danish in order to carry out the data collection. The ideal candidate will have a background in northern/north-western European Neolithic archaeology. We seek candidates with good interpersonal skills, the ability to organise work independently and to produce state-of-the art research. Experiences with managing large datasets and familiarity with GIS and network analysis is an advantage. Furthermore, good skills in spoken and written English is a prerequisite.

Salary and conditions of employment

Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary range starts at DKK 33,600 (EUR 4,507) per month + a 17,1 % contribution to the pension scheme. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements on an annual basis.

The Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) have further agreed on a protocol that makes it possible for international researchers employed by the University to achieve a pension exemption, whereby the pension contribution will be paid out as salary. Cover letter (max 1 pages). The cover letter should specify how the applicant’s qualifications and experiences match the project’s focus on processes of migration, networks and mobility at the start of the Neolithic c. 4000-3300 BC.

Curriculum vitae (with the applicant’s email and telephone number). For applicants who have been on maternity or paternity leave after obtaining their PhD, the age of their PhD degree will be extended by calculating the actual number of weeks of leave and multiplying that by 2. The exact period of the maternity/paternity leave, with start date and end date, must be stat­ed in the applicant’s CV.

Documentation of qualifications (examination certificates/PhD diploma, etc.).

Complete list of publications. The enclosed publications must be marked with*.

Publications. Applicants may choose a maximum of three publications for assessment. Publication dates must be clearly marked on the publication list. The publications selected must be uploaded as attachments and listed from 1 to 3. Should any of the submitted publications consist of work with named co-authors, or work that is otherwise the result of collective academic endeavours, the extent of the applicant’s contribution to the work must be clearly stipulated. The Faculty may ask for a signed statement from the co-authors stipulating the extent and nature of each individual’s contribution.

Only material in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, German and English can be expected to be assessed.

Appointment procedure

After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.
