Crystallization Development Engineer, Solid Form Science We are looking for a talented chemical engineer or chemist to become part of the Solid Form S

H. Lundbeck A/S

Crystallization Development Engineer, Solid Form Science
We are looking for a talented chemical engineer or chemist to become part of the Solid Form Science (SFS) department. SFS forms part of the Chemical & Pharmaceutical Development (C&PD) organization, which is responsible for the development and innovation of new drug candidates based on chemically synthesized molecules that help improve the lives of patients suffering from brain diseases.

Many of these molecules are ultimately administered in a solid form. The role of the SFS department is to synthesize solid forms, characterize them and select the appropriate solid form for further development. SFS then designs crystallization and associated isolation processes that robustly deliver the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) of the desired purity, solid form, morphology and particle size distribution. To ensure a seamless transition between chemical and formulation development the SFS department maintains strong links with pharmaceutical development, analytical development and process chemistry and supports project teams that drive the development of new drug candidates.

Your job and key responsibilities
You will form part of the Solid Form Science department and report to the Director of SFS. You will contribute to the design and development of industrially relevant and reliable crystallization processes that ensure control of purity, solid form and particle size distribution for active pharmaceutical ingredients. To ensure this, you will design and perform laboratory experiments and use the obtained data in conjunction with crystallization process modeling and control approaches. Within SFS you will work as part of an interdisciplinary team involving solid state experts, organic chemists and chemical engineers and engage with key stakeholders in the department of process chemistry and pharmaceutical development. Your work will contribute to the scale up of the designed processes towards commercial production.

Your workplace will be located in Valby, Denmark. The position requires a limited number of working days at our commercial production facilities in Denmark (Lumsås, Sjællands Odde) and Italy (Padova).

Qualifications
Our preferred candidate has the following personal and professional qualifications:

  • As a minimum, you have a PhD or are about to complete a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related discipline with a focus on controlled crystallization of organic compounds or you possess an MS degree in these disciplines and relevant pharmaceutical industry experience (5+ years).
  • You demonstrated expertise in crystallization process development and scale-up with an emphasis on control of polymorph, purity, bulk properties and particle size.
  • You possess experience in scale up/down of crystallization processes under consideration of relevant mixing regimes.
  • Familiarity with process analytical technologies in the context of crystallization process development is desired.
  • A good working knowledge of (feedforward, feedback) control strategies applied to crystallization processes is required; experience with these strategies is desirable.
  • Expertise in statistical and/or mechanistic crystallization process models is desired.
  • You exhibit a high level of safety awareness and conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner. You hold others accountable for safe behavior in the work environment.
  • You possess strong analytical skills that allow you to arrive at workable process solutions using incomplete data.
  • You are a team player and you contribute to a positive social atmosphere and an open and collaborative working environment.
  • You are fluent in written and spoken English. Fluency in Danish is a plus.
