Scientific Assistant in Biological Methanation (Power-to-Gas)
The Department of Engineering, Aarhus University, invites applicants for a position as scientific assistant within the field of biological conversion of CO2 to CH4 through biological methanation (biomethanation).

The deadline for the application will be 17th of August, 2020. The position is available from 1st of September 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description/research project/research area
You will be part of the research project “APPLAUSE - Stable green power supply through dynamic coupling of bioenergy to renewable electricity”, a large-scale collaboration between tech-giant Apple Inc. and Aarhus University.
The project is aimed at developing knowledge and technology for decreasing the global dependence of fossil-based fuels and enable on-demand power generation in a fossil-free context.
By using your expertise in process engineering and reactor design you will be involved in the development of biological power-to-gas technology for producing CO2-neutral synthetic natural gas (BioSNG) from renewable energy and CO2 waste gas. The biomethanation technologies will be a part of the technology portfolio currently under development at AU Engineering.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a BSc in biological- or chemical engineering and is required to have expertize or hands-on experience with:

  • Biomethanation, either in situ or ex situ systems
  • Design and construction of both lab- or pilot-scale bioreactor systems
  • Design and construction of sensors and process control systems
  • Operation of biological reactors
  • Chemical and microbiological analytical techniques
  • Excellence in both written and spoken English

You will be working as part of the research group “Microbial Conversion Technologies” and you are therefore expected to be a team player.

About the Biological and Chemical Engineering Section
Biological and Chemical Engineering is a multidisciplinary research area. It includes disease and health, materials, environmental technologies, biorefining, energy technologies and food and ingredient technology. The research at the Biological and Chemical Engineering Section at Department of Engineering is based on both theoretical and experimental methods, and include the design, development, operation, monitoring, control, and optimization of chemical, physical and biological processes. Department of Engineering holds a special position of international strength in scientific activities related to biogas energy, biorefining, agricultural emissions, lipid technology, polymer and membrane technology, protein engineering and biosynthesis. In addition, the Biological and Chemical Engineering section conducts public sector consultancy on agricultural challenges such as Air Quality Engineering and Biorefining. The Biological and Chemical Engineering Section is part of the Science and Technology Faculty Interdisciplinary Centre WATEC (water treatment technologies), CBIO (circular bioeconomy), iFOOD (food technology), iMAT (advanced materials), iLIFE (biophysics and imagining), iClimate (climate change).

The place of work is Hangøvej 2, 8200 Aarhus N, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Application procedure
Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on qualification requirements and job content may be found in the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
