PhD fellow in Condensed Matter Theory

Københavns Universitet (KU)

Department of Physics, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in condensed matter theory commencing 1 October 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The project will be funded by a grant from the Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education (SFU). The position will be part of a comprehensive new Danish research environment (Q-MAT) in magnetism and quantum materials, related to upcoming research at the European Spallation Source (ESS), and embedded in the condensed matter theory group at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen. Significant collaboration is expected to take place with other people including Prof. Kim Lefmann, J. Paaske, A. T. Rømer (NBI), N. B. Christensen (DTU), H. Rønnow (EPFL), and other international collaborators including I. Eremin, P. Kotetes, P. J. Hirschfeld, and world-leading experimental STM, neutron and x-ray scattering groups. For further information on the condensed matter theory group at the University of Copenhagen, please see http://cmt.nbi.ku.dk.

Project description
The overarching goal of the project is to obtain new fundamental insight into the origin of unconventional superconductivity in correlated materials, including, for example, bulk materials like cuprates, iron-based superconductors, as well as 2D materials like FeSe on STO, and magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. In close collaboration with experimental activities at Q-MAT and experimental results from ESS, the PhD project will perform supporting theoretical calculations and also pursue new related theoretical challenges in the field of unconventional superconductivity. The project is also expected to be centered on correlation-induced inhomogeneous electronic phases, and the possibility of novel topological states of matter in these systems.
