Institut for Menneskerettigheder

The Danish Institute for Human Rights (the Institute) will be opening four new regional hubs in 2020-21. This position will be responsible for establishing and managing the regional hub in East Africa.

As our regional representative you will lead the establishment of the East Africa hub, including overseeing the administrative and legal steps for the registration of the Institute in Ethiopia. You will contribute to the implementation of the Institute’s international strategy in the region, in close coordination with the thematic programmes of the Institute.

You will further expand the range of stakeholders we engage with in our thematic areas in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya amongst other countries as well as regional organisations, etc. You will contribute to the activities of the Institute in East Africa including analytical work on human rights in the priority areas of the Institute. You will identify development opportunities regionally and lead on fundraising to enable the Institute’s work in Ethiopia as well as support fundraising in East Africa.

The regional hub will reflect the entire international strategy of the Institute and you will liaise with all relevant thematic programmes that fall under that strategy. You will report to the department director of the Human Rights and Business Department.


  • Experience at regional/international level, experience working in East Africa – minimum 5 - 7 years of professional experience in the field of human rights and development;
  • Strong knowledge of human rights context and actors in Ethiopia and East Africa;
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, to ensure registration of the Institute in Ethiopia
  • Experience in fundraising and managing budgets;
  • Experience with managing complex relationships with a variety of partners, consortiums and stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills, including a proven ability to work in politically sensitive contexts;
  • The ability to be comfortable and effective at working independently, but in close touch with colleagues;
  • Professional fluency in English;
  • A willingness and ability to travel regularly;

Considered an asset:

  • Experience in setting up offices;
  • Specific expertise in one of our thematic priorities including: human rights and business; sustainable development; access to justice and law enforcement; and national human rights institutions/actors;
  • Experience working in or with national human rights institutions;
  • Professional fluency in Amharic or other languages.

The position will initially be on full time-basis (37 hours per week) in Copenhagen, Denmark (with possibility of home-based work if successful candidate does not have a work permit in EU) for a period of six to nine months. Following this period, we anticipate a 2-year contract with work station in Addis Ababa. Regular travels should be expected. Conditions will be determined depending on the geographical location of the duty station.
