Research Assistant in vascular smooth muscle cell plasticity and biomechanics

The Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Health, Aarhus University, invites applications for a two-year research assistant position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a research project in an international research group focused on smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis. The vacancy is a fixed-term, full-time position. It is available from October 1st, 2020, or as soon as possible after that.

Department of Clinical Medicine
As a research assistant at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialities and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square metres of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities and also advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the Master's degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 425 academic employees and the same number of PhD students cooperating across disciplines. As a research assistant, you will be working on Aarhus University Hospital or another hospital in the Central Denmark Region. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

Your job responsibilities
As research assistant, your primary tasks are to carry out cultures of aortic smooth muscle cells subjected to mechanical stress on flexible membranes.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Establishing different vascular-related in vitro assays.
  • Perform targeted gene silencing assays.
  • Evaluate gene expression by real-time qPCR.
  • Analyze RNAseq datasets.

The job also contemplates the use of a fluorescence microscope. You are expected to publish this project’s results in peer-reviewed journals and participate in scientific meetings. You will collaborate with internal and external groups to maximize productivity and performance.

You will report to the Head of Department.

Your competences
You hold an MSc in biological sciences, molecular medicine or a related field. You have experience with cell culture and vitro assays. International experience and knowledge of vascular pathologies will be considered an advantage.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are friendly and helpful and able to contribute to a good work environment. You are self-driven and capable of planning and researching while willing to collaborate closely in an international team.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.

The successful candidate is offereddeep understanding of several in vitro cardiovascular models, particularly regarding smooth muscle cell phenotypic modulation; general knowledge of experimental atherosclerosis research; laboratory space, shared equipment; a positive work environment with teamwork, close working relations, and social activities; a workplace characterized by professionalism, equality and a healthy work-life balance; constant communication, shared expertise, and mentorship and a fully stocked snack drawer and ad libitum epic coffee.

  • Appointment as a research assistant requires academic qualifications at master's degree level.
