Department of Plant & Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering two PhD scholarships in plant developmental biology commencing 01.11.2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Description of the scientific environment
The laboratory of Stephan Wenkel at Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark investigates the function of microProteins in model and crop plants (https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/plant_biochemistry/plant-development/) and is located at the Copenhagen Plant Science Centre (www.cpsc.ku.dk). The Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences and CPSC constitutes a stimulating and international research environment with state-of-the-art facilities.

Project description
We are recruiting two PhD students to work on three-year projects aimed at manipulating plant development using microProtein engineering. MicroProteins are small single-domain proteins that have been shown to control diverse biological pathways. In the projects we will employ genome-engineering approaches in tomato to modulate microProtein expression and activity.
Project 1 with a possible start date November 1, 2020 is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation through the Ascending Investigator Program and aims to investigate how microProteins influence the control of flowering time. We will employ a mix of experimental approaches ranging from proteomics, protein-interaction studies to CRISPR/Cas9-based genome engineering methods.
Project 2 with a possible start date January 1st, 2021 is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and aims to investigate how microProteins affect fruit development. We will use a combination of in vivo and in vitro protein-engineering approaches to modulate microProtein-interactions.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals with an MSc in biology or related disciplines. The ideal applicant has experience in working with plants and thrives in an international working environment. Knowledge in genome-engineering and/or protein biochemistry is a plus.

Job description
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:
• To manage and carry through your research project
• Attend PhD courses
• Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
• Teach and disseminate your research
• To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
• Work for the department

Formal requirements
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in Biology or Biotechnology with good results and good English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications emphasis will also be laid on previous publications (if any) and relevant work experience.

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 322,642 (approx. €43,015) including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 44,567). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

The main criterion for selection will be the research potential of the applicant and the above-mentioned skills. The successful candidate will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of Science.
