PhD fellowship in Respiratory Physiology at the Department Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences

Københavns Universitet (KU)

We are offering a PhD fellowship in respiratory physiology from 1 November 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.

One of the great unanswered questions within respiratory physiology is whether the healthy lung undergoes specific exercise training-induced adaptations or not. Currently, the dogma is that the lung is perhaps the only organ of the human body that does not such changes. However, previous studies that have attempted to address this have used relatively short training interventions, and focused only on rather crude estimates of (resting) lung function. In the present study, we will challenge this by examining various aspects of lung function with particular emphasis on pulmonary vascular function both during rest and exercise before and after an extended period (6 months) of regular supervised training. The findings may both broaden our understanding of basic exercise physiology, and will furthermore be of use in the design of rehabilitation programs for patients with chronic lung diseases.

We expect the PhD to be instrumental in coordinating and conducting the experiments, including the supervised training programs. The studies will be conducted in close collaboration with the Centre for Physical Activity Research and the Department of Clinical Physiology, Nuclear Medicine & PET at Rigshospitalet.

The principal supervisor is Associate Professor Ronan Berg.
