The Sahel project works to improve the national human rights systems of Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali. This is done through partnerships with national human rights institutions (NHRIs), security actors, ministries, justice actors and civil society as well as the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Danish Institute for Human Rights has permanent presence in Africa through national offices in each of the three project countries.


  • Manage, coordinate and report on country projects in the Sahel project.
  • Have financial responsibility and budget oversight of the country projects with support from the internal project economist.
  • Have the administrative and financial responsibility of national offices in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. This includes the day-to-day contact with the national representatives providing the support that they need.
  • Ensure and validate the monthly financial reports from the national offices, in close cooperation with the accounting department and the national financial officers.
  • Ensure and validate the monthly narrative reports from the national offices in close cooperation with the national project officers.
  • Support the national representatives in Burkina Faso, Niger and Mali in ensuring the development of the project activities.
  • Ensure coordination of project activities with the Sahel team.
  • Support the national staff, the human rights advisers, the programme manager in maintaining a close cooperation with donors and national partners including promoting local ownership of projects.
  • Support the programme manager in programme administration, budgeting and reporting tasks – and ensuring that the national offices have all needed and relevant information from HQ.
  • Ensure a close collaboration with the other Sahel project manager, as you will be the Sahel project manager team – this will include day-to-day contact and weekly meetings with the programme manager.
  • Ensure a close collaboration with the project economist, the human rights adviser and the programme manager based in Copenhagen.
  • Support the student assistant and coordinate his tasks


  • Relevant advanced degree in law, business, public administration, social sciences or similar.
  • Fluency in French and English (spoken and written). Danish is not a requirement but an advantage.
  • Context knowledge of Africa. Field experience from Burkina Faso, Mali or Niger is an advantage.
  • Good administrative and financial skills.
  • Knowledge of EU project administration.
  • Knowledge and interest in human rights and development issues, preferably within an Africa context.
  • Experience in working with development projects.
  • Experience in working with state actors.
  • Experience in being part of a team and contributing to team building
  • Excellent communication and inter-personal skills including a proven ability to interact well with partners and to work in politically sensitive contexts.
  • Well-organised, flexible and able to work independently.

You will be based at the Danish Institute for Human Rights’ head office in Copenhagen within the Department for Human Rights Systems. You are expected to travel on a regular basis (up to 40 % of your time) to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

The position is a full-time position (37 hours per week) and salary will be determined in accordance with the Danish Ministry of Finance’s agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations with the possibility to negotiate individual supplements.
