PhD scholarship in Sound Field Analysis and Acoustic Signal Processing

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Frist 29. september 2020

The Acoustic Technology group (ACT), Department of Electrical Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in in sound field analysis and acoustic signal processing. The position is a new research project granted by the VILLUM foundation (“large-scale acoustic holography”).

The ACT group conducts research in sound field analysis, measurement techniques, acoustic signal processing, architectural acoustics, transduction, vibration and numerical methods in acoustics.

The goal of this PhD project is to develop novel methods to characterize the spatio-temporal properties of the sound field in a room, based on data acquired with microphone arrays and distributed sensor networks. A central element of the project is to examine data driven approaches to model and reconstruct the full three-dimensional sound field inside a room.

Responsibilities and tasks

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate, with a relevant MSc-degree and experience in acoustics and signal processing, who is dedicated and passionate about research and scientific discovery. A background in acoustics is necessary, and having skills in some of the following areas is valuable:

  • Signal processing
  • Mathematical modelling
  • Physics and wave propagation
  • Numerical optimization and inverse problems
  • Deep learning for physical applications
  • Good communication skills are also an asset for the position.

As a member of the research team, you will have the opportunity to conduct fundamental research in acoustics and acoustic signal processing. The research conducted in the project aims at examining the use of data driven approaches and state of the art sensing methods to reconstruct the sound field in a room. Additionally, as a PhD and member of the research group at DTU you will be part of a creative, stimulating and diverse scientific environment, where you will have the opportunity to develop your professional competence, participate in international scientific meetings and conferences, develop your teaching and supervise students, visit other internationally leading research centres in acoustics and engage in public dissemination and outreach activities.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. A MSc degree in Acoustics, and experience in Signal processing is required for the position.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Associate professor Efren Fernandez Grande (project leader/principal investigator) and associate Professor Finn T. Agerkvist (head of section).
