PhD scholarship in Coordination for Multi-Carrier Integrated Energy Systems

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Frist 30. september 2020

The Centre for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in “market-based coordination for multi-carrier integrated energy systems”. The PhD project is funded by DTU joint alliance research program, aiming at strengthening the research collaborations with alliance universities. This specific project targets a research collaboration between DTU and Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Responsibilities and tasks

The transition towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sectors (including electricity, heat and natural gas systems) imposes significant changes in their planning and operation. The flexibility potential at the interface of different energy sectors enables integrating additional renewable energy sources with stochastic generation. However, energy sectors in the current practice are being operated independently without a proper coordination. This avoids harnessing the entire potential flexibility at the interface of energy sectors, leading to a suboptimal operation in terms of overall social welfare. This PhD project aims at developing novel coordination schemes among energy sectors, while respecting the current market practice in clearing heat, electricity and natural gas markets independently and sequentially. These coordination schemes are expected to be “market-based”, implying that the enhanced coordination among energy sectors are going to be achieved by introducing new market products, and/or bidding format, and/or market players.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
