Postdoc in Electrical ROCKWOOL Cupola Ovens

Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU)

Frist 10. oktober 2020

A two-year postdoc position on development and integration of electrical heating for Rockwool cupola ovens is available at the CHEC Research Centre, DTU Chemical Engineering. The position is part of the ProBu - Process Technology for Sustainable Building Materials Production project conducted in collaboration with FLSmidth and Rockwool. Presently ROCKWOOL use charcoal fired cupola ovens for the production of isolation materials. By using electrical heating, and applying power produced from renewable sources, the CO2 emissions from the cupola based ROCKWOOL production can be reduced. The use of electricity gives rise to several challenges regarding electrical heating method, process integration, product changes and emissions. It will be your task to conduct research in a tight collaboration with ROCKWOOL to support the developmental activities regarding electrical based cupola ovens.

Responsibilities and tasks

The objectives of the postdoc project are to conduct research that can ensure an efficient transition of the cupola melting technology to use electrical heating with respect to obtaining reliable plant operation, obtain high product quality and minimize environmental impact. The working tasks may include:

  • To investigate if the system can be operated with a combination of electricity and a few percent of biomass based chars
  • To investigate if geometrical changes of the bottom part of the cupola melter can lead to a system that can operate with an energy input 100% based on electricity
  • To investigate how emissions can be minimized when electricity is applied

You will together with DTU and company supervisors make the detailed research plan that will include both laboratory and full-scale plant measurements.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree in chemical engineering or equivalent, with a strong research background on high temperature process technology. It is an advantage to have experiences in collaborating with industrial partners and doing experimental work on full-scale industrial process equipment.
