Associate Professorship in Humanities Computing

The School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for an associate professorship in humanities computing with special responsibility to lead and further develop the Center for Humanities Computing (CHC), Aarhus University. The associate professorship is a permanent, full-time position, commencing on 1 February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Place of employment: Interacting Minds Centre (IMC), Nobelparken J. Chr. Skousvej 4, Aarhus, Denmark.

Job description
We are looking for applicants with a background in arts and/or humanities, with well-documented, excellent research credentials in humanities computing and/or digital humanities and experience directing an interdisciplinary research environment. This includes experience and expertise gained through interdisciplinary collaborations, an outstanding publication record, and a documented ability to attract external funding and nurture national and international networks.

Futhermore, applicants must have the skills to develop the Center for Humanities Computing as a leading national and international hub for research and practice in humanities computing. This includes the development of tools, methods and practices that allow researchers from arts and humanities to engage with digital and computational methods in ways that enhance their research potentials. It also requires a track record in establishing interdisciplinary collaborations at local, national and international levels.

The successful applicant will be responsible for the strategy and daily leadership of the Center for Humanities Computing, with reference to the board of the center. The successful applicant must be able to develop courses in humanities computing at all levels (BA, MA, PhD and postgraduate) (see language requirements/expectations below). We emphasise the importance of maintaining dedicated and respectful educational relationships, so the ideal applicant should be able to demonstrate and exemplify their commitment to participatory teaching initiatives.

Talent development
The successful applicant will be expected to supervise and help develop the careers of early-career researchers as well as to recruit and supervise PhD students and participate in the development and implementation of PhD courses in humanities computing.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as described in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts, for instance research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society partners or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in the humanities and document a significant, international research trajectory covering one or more subfields of humanities computing. They must have experience establishing and maintaining an environment that develops technologies, methodologies and best practices for computationally empowered cultural and historical research. They must be able to document teaching qualifications equivalent to those acquired through an assistant professorship. They must also be able to document the following:

  • Relevant academic publications at the highest international level
  • Research trajectory in humanities computing
  • Active participation in international research collaboration
  • Knowledge of data and workflows in the humanities and experience with interdisciplinary team-based research that combines humanities and computational approaches
  • Strong teaching competences, a commitment to teaching development, experience supervising student projects, and talent development equivalent to that acquired through an assistant professorship.

Experience developing, implementing and directing a research center is an asset but not a requirement.

Applicants are asked to submit with their letter of application a research plan for the next three years as well as a vision for the future development of the CHC.
Please note that applications which do not include samples of publications (maximum eight) will not be considered. A list of publications is not sufficient.

Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time of the applicant in question. We therefore ask applicants to specify any career breaks they have had (e.g. parental leave or sick leave) so that we can more accurately assess their research productivity.
Non-Danish-speaking applicants should be aware that the acquisition of sufficient Danish to participate in the daily administrative and academic activities of the Centre within two years of taking up the position is a condition for employment.

References or recommendations should not be included with the application. Applicants who are selected for interview may be asked to provide professional references.

Qualification requirements
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications.

Faculty of Arts refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities (the Appointment Order).
