Post Doc position in Bioactive Natural Compounds in Plant Defence

Aarhus Universitet (AU)

The Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University in Slagelse, Denmark is looking for a dedicated and responsible postdoctoral researcher in the exploitation of bioactive compounds from agricultural crops for controlling plant-parasitic nematodes. The position is available from January 1st, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter and will be available for 1.5 years.

The position is part of a newly funded Villum Experiment project “Transfer of biochemical defence between plant species”. The project will investigate if plants exploit defence chemicals synthesized in neighbouring plants as a fast and inexpensive track to defence against pest organisms. We will elucidate to which extent bioactive compounds, originating from one agricultural crop species, can be taken up in another crop species. Transformation products of the absorbed compounds in the receiving crop species will be identified and their potential suppressive effects on plant parasitic nematodes will be assessed.

The candidate must be able to work cross-disciplinarily in teams of collaborating researchers and highly professional technical staff across the department. The successful candidate must be prepared to combine research on mass spectrometry based analytical chemistry and plant parasitic nematodes. The candidate will be based at the Crop Health and Entomology and Plant Pathology Sections, Department of Agroecology, Forsøgsvej 1, DK 4200 Slagelse.

Specific qualifications and competences
We are searching for a candidate with a genuine interest in the chemical mechanisms behind ecological interactions. The candidate must have expertise in quantitative target analysis, untarget analysis (metabolomics), identification, and development of analytical methods. The candidate must be passionate in relation to the use of mass spectrometry for studying biological processes, and should have experience in/be eager to learn the establishment and maintenance of cultivation systems of plants and/or rearing systems of nematodes.
