Senior Automation Engineer – Offshore Auxiliary Systems

to work within our Business Area Wind, Offshore, Engineering.

The Engineering department is the technical know-how centre within Business Area Wind, setting the standards and guidelines as well as being embedded within our projects to drive technical excellence through the whole project lifecycle.
Working within the Technical Engineering team of the Electrical Infrastructure department, the Senior Automation Engineer for Offshore Auxiliary Engineer shall be the focal point for all auxiliary automation systems in Vattenfall Offshore Substation Assets, providing technical leadership across the life cycle of entire development and operational portfolios.

Key Responsibilities as Senior Automation Engineer – Offshore Auxiliary Systems

  • Provide technical leadership for the Process Automation of Auxiliary Systems in offshore HVDC/ HVAC platforms, with portfolio-wide Technical Authority across full asset lifetime.
  • Work with dedicated engineering specialists to provide scalable technical leadership, establishing a framework of processes, guidelines, and other resources to maximise the operational efficiency of Engineering.
  • Lead technical investigations on asset performance/optimization and equipment failures across the operational fleet. Act as a proactive and visible Engineering link to all operational assets.
  • Work with internal R&D & Joint Industry projects and Academic institutions to promote innovation, balance new technologies against portfolio risk, and control IP/Patent environment for scope area.
  • Act as approving authority for technical documentation related to the design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance procedures across the Platform Automation scope.
  • Act as Vattenfall technical ambassador for industry events/consultations relating to scope area.
  • Support Package and Product Engineering to inject technical leadership into all stages of the project lifecycle. Control levels of technical variation within the Product/Project portfolio and build learnings into standardization strategy and processes.
  • Play an active role in delivering cost-optimized design for automation systems through cooperation with Vattenfall’s engineering line organization, external consultants, and OEMs.
  • Drive safety by design through the entire project lifecycle.
  • Act as a mentor for colleagues in the scope area. Demonstrate technical leadership and extend influence beyond normal job responsibilities.

Your Background

  • Extensive experience in automation of Auxiliary Systems that include Integrated and/or Distributed Control Systems for Power Management, Auxiliary Control, HVA/C, Water Cooling, Platform SCADA/HMI, Diesel Generator, UPS, Fire Detection and Fighting, Emergency Shutdown, Access control, Condition Monitoring & Process Communication Systems, and any other system required for the safe operation of the offshore substations.
  • Graduate degree in relevant Electrical, Control or Automation engineering.
  • Extensive experience within Integrated Control and Monitoring systems on offshore Gas, Oil or HVDC platforms.
  • Strong understanding of platform automation systems including PLC hardware and software, knowledge on programming and configuration (e.g. IEC61131-3), knowledge on process and field communication protocols, SCADA/HMI systems, databases, etc.
  • Strong understanding of control engineering, including setting and tuning methodologies of control loops.
  • Demonstrable experience in definition and development of control and automation architectures applied in offshore industry.
  • Demonstrable experience from early concept selection/FEED through to construction and installation/commissioning of Integrated Control and Monitoring Systems. Experience drawn from across the complete-asset lifecycle is a benefit.
  • Strong HSE culture, with an understanding of offshore automation regulations and commitment to contribute to the development and delivery of inherently safer wind farm projects.
  • Familiar with renewable energy technologies, preferably on-and offshore wind.
  • Good English language skills. German/ Danish language skills are an advantage.
