Location
Noordwijk
Our team and mission
This position is based at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) - Noordwijk, Netherlands
The internship will be in the Utilisation and Enabled Science Team, which coordinates the ESA research programme in Physical sciences and Biology, using various microgravity platforms including the International Space Station, Moon, and Mars. Projects cover a wide range of topics like Earth atmospheric measurement, ultraprecise cold atom sensors, quantum information and high-energy particles, soft or complex matter, boiling, evaporation and heat transfer, and advanced materials processing.
Candidates interested are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int
Field(s) of activity for the internship
You can choose between the following topics:
1) Topic 1: Quantum sensing techniques
Quantum sensing techniques, leveraging innovations like NV centers and cold atoms, are unlocking new frontiers in space exploration. These cutting-edge methods promise to revolutionize our understanding and capabilities in space by:
- Enhance space exploration: Detecting planetary magnetic anomalies to discover ores and make mining in-situ resource possible and enhance navigation for spacecraft and rovers;
- Advancing Scientific Research: Enabling detailed studies of solar wind; studying planets interior by mapping their gravitational field; test fundamental laws of physics.
Project Goals:
- Review the State of the Art: Assess the latest advancements in quantum sensing techniques within the space environment;
- Define New Instruments: Develop potential instruments based on these techniques to achieve the objectives outlined above.
- Image and Data Analysis: Our AI will analyze large datasets from the VIPGRAN and FOAM ISS experiments. These tools can also be adapted for the data analysis of future missions like Giant Fluctuations and Colloidal Solids;
- Exploration Applications: AI will assist in decision-making for robotic payloads and support humans in deep space missions. Additionally, AI can enhance optical communication in planetary missions.
2) Topic 2: Artificial Intelligence applications to Space Exploration
Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that can revolutionize space science and exploration. In this project, the internship aims to develop AI tools for the following purposes:
Behavioural competencies
Result Orientation
Operational Efficiency
Fostering Cooperation
Relationship Management
Continuous Improvement
Forward Thinking
For more information, please refer to ESA Core Behavioural Competencies guidebook
Education
You must be a university student, preferably in your final or second-to-last year of a university course at Master’s level and you need to remain enrolled at your University for the entire duration of the internship.
Additional requirements
