The European Spallation Source ERIC, ESS, is hiring motivated and inspired people to design, construct and operate the world’s most powerful neutron source. We seek ambitious, talented people in a range of fields who are excited about playing a part in the future of science in Europe. The ESS accelerator, target and experiments are based in the university city Lund, Sweden and our Data Management Software Center (DMSC) is placed in Llungby, Denmark.

We are looking for a Student Worker to work 10 hours per week at the Data Systems and Technologies group (DST) at the ESS Data Management and Software Center.

About the team
In this position you will be working alongside experienced personnel within the areas of HPC, Storage systems and virtualization systems, as well as network, infrastructure and data center management. As part of the DST team, you will be working on the construction and commissioning of one of the world largest research facilities.

About the role
As part of the position, you will perform tasks, including, but not limited to:

  • System administration tasks such as creating and supporting users on the ESS HPC cluster;
  • Working with server hardware on maintenance tasks like replacing disks, memory modules, etc.;
  • Working with virtualization systems;
  • English skills both written and spoken as we are an international team;
  • Working with and on deployment systems and configuration change management systems.

The position allows for candidates to grow in their role while having adequate backup from experienced personnel, and there could be good opportunities for integrating the duties of the position with the candidate’s study curriculum like master’s projects etc.

About you
The successful candidate will have/be:

  • University student within the areas of computer science, natural science or engineering, with at least first year exams passed.
  • Some experience with physical computer components is expected, but does not have to be from a professional context.
  • Practical experience with Linux, as well as an interest in HPC for scientific computing, virtualization or scientific computing in general.
  • Full professional proficiency in English, written as well as oral.

The incumbent is reliable, conscientious and punctual. While a strong background in the listed areas is not a requirement, a keen interest is a necessity:

  • Infrastructure as A Service;
  • OpenStack, OpenNebula, ProxMox or similar virtualisation environments;
  • HA and site-to-site fail-over services;
  • Design and implementation of high capacity/high performance storage systems or large virtualisation systems;
  • Kubernetes or other container orchestration technologies.

Duration & Location
The position is a part-time (10 hours per week), fixed-term position for 1 year.
