The section conducts research in digital and high-frequency electronics, embedded systems, control, and communication, utilizing cutting-edge reconfigurable computing and sensors. The section aims to develop next-generation electronics and computing solutions that solve technology-related challenges in modern devices such as autonomous robots, drones, IoT, smart grid, and healthcare technology.

The section is responsible for the educational programs in electrical engineering in Odense with degrees in Bachelor’s and Master of Science in Electronics Engineering. At present, the focus of the section is on two research fields: drone design for infrastructure inspections and microchip design for advanced onboard computing. Over the next few years an expansion to include at least 20 academics, including PhD students and engineers, is expected in the section to support research, industrial collaboration, and educational activities. The continuation of the section’s contribution to the field of electrical engineering and related areas will be enabled by this growth and supplemented by students from the electronics programmes.

The SDU campus in Odense comprises five faculties and soon also a large university hospital creating a great concentration of academics and students facilitating interdisciplinary research and rich student life. The city of Odense is culturally rich surrounded by a vibrant and growing robotics community and highly livable with a green banked meandering river cutting through the centre and attractive residential areas.

Job Description
The position involves conducting research on the real-time connectivity of distributed embedded systems, with a focus on the high-frequency synchronization of collaborative devices in a decentralized network. A strong understanding of mixed-signal integrated circuits, physical layers, communication protocols, and modulation techniques for modern communication links such as 4G, 5G, LoRa, etc. and antenna design is essential. The practical applications of this research primarily lie in the field of autonomous collaborative robots, drone swarms, and low-power radio sensor networks.

The research will be a part of the established and emerging technical expertise at SDU, spanning a wide array of specializations. These include FPGA and neuromorphic computing, Edge AI, machine learning, sensing, and energy harvesting technologies. This multidisciplinary approach is geared towards fostering innovation and pushing the frontiers in the field of advanced robotics and drone technologies.

Duties
Your role will span teaching, research, and leading the further development of the Electronics education programme. As part of your teaching responsibilities, you will be involved in course planning and supervising bachelor and master’s students in Digital and High-frequency Electronics. Your expertise in electronics and the implementation of physical layers of communication systems will be crucial for delivering courses within these subject areas.

You will be assigned the task of establishing and advancing your line of research, with a focus on securing external funding. Your research will primarily focus on the design and development of the connectivity components of smart electronic devices, specifically tailored for applications in robotics and drones. An additional responsibility will be to develop the curriculum for both bachelor and master’s classes in Electronics. This includes managing course planning, allocating resources, and supervising junior professors and teachers within these academic programs.

Qualifications Required

  • The applicant should hold a doctoral degree (PhD) in telecommunications and electronics or a related relevant subject area.
  • The applicant must have relevant research expertise and teaching skills that are aligned with the content and responsibilities of the position. This includes possessing pedagogical skills and professional skills that are essential for carrying out the tasks associated with the role.
  • A strong track record for research fundraising is required.

Other Expertise International experiences in a research environment that is different from the one in which the applicant completed their doctoral studies will be considered an advantage.

Conditions of employment
Appointment as associate professor is permanent.

Employment as an associate professor requires academic qualifications at PhD level as well as scientific and educational qualifications at a level achievable based on satisfactory completion of a period of employment as assistant professor/researcher but may be achievable by other means.

The main responsibilities of an associate professor are research and research-based teaching.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on salary and taxation.
