UNOPS in Bhutan

UNOPS Bhutan, a key implementing partner of the World Bank-funded PLEASE Project, is dedicated to advancing sustainable development through innovative plastic recycling initiatives. Our team, consisting of a Project Manager, a Project Management Support Officer, and an Environmental Technical Specialist, oversees two grantees under the RBG of the PLEASE project and three innovation grantees working on diverse plastic recycling projects. Together, we aim to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices across Bhutan.

Project Information

UNOPS has signed an MOU with an intergovernmental organization called SACEP (South Asia Cooperative Environment Program). SACEP is implementing the World Bank-funded PLEASE Project in South Asia. In accordance with the Agreement, UNOPS should provide implementation support and advice to SACEP in implementing the Plastic free Rivers & Seas for South Asia Project (PLEASE). UNOPS is expected to assist the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) in implementing the RBGs (Regional Competitive Block Grants) under Component 1, Component 2 and Component 3 of the PLEASE Project.

The Project Management Intern will have an opportunity to work on the below listed areas:

  • Providing support to the project team with the extraction and collection of data from different sources. The intern will also be expected to share or propose improvements to these tasks (e.g. automations, dashboards, etc).
  • Learn and Assist in the project budget and financial expenditure and all administrative procedures in line with the work-plan.
  • Learn and Assist in processing direct payments and advance requests and prepare project budget revisions. The intern will also be expected to share or propose improvements to these processes.
  • Analysis and structuring of data, and compiling periodic updates to different users.
  • Support in conducting periodic project health checks.
  • Provide support to the project team in setting up regular and ad-hoc meetings; prepare summaries of actions to be taken, and track progress on planned issues and follow-up with focal points.
  • Work on the compilation and distribution of progress reports, lessons learned and best practice; and periodic newsletters, and other communications and stakeholder management initiatives.
  • Provide support and technical input in updating and administering of progress dashboard.
  • Get acquainted with projects’ documentation and support in its management and review.
  • Support and provide recommendations on rolling out of the capacity building and training plan on program management.
  • Support in the design and roll-out of necessary systems and processes of the project.
  • Participate in project meetings and initiatives with the aim of building experience around Project Management.

Training components and learning elements

  • The incumbent will have access to project and portfolio documentation to learn about project management and development cooperation in the areas the portfolio covers. She/he has the opportunity to join official meetings and learn about UNOPS, and the UN, and multilateral cooperation. She/he will get exposure to key stakeholders, multi-partner donors, international non-governmental organizations and other representatives.
  • The incumbent will also have full access to UNOPS intranet, Google Currents/Communities of Practice (COPs) in Project Management, Gender Mainstreaming, Innovation and Research, Sustainable Infrastructure, etc.

Participation in missions or training courses

  • The incumbent will have access to the UNOPS Learning Zone and apply for training in Programme Management, Gender Mainstreaming, Coaching, and mandatory training as per UNOPS policy.

  • A First level Degree (Bachelor’s Degree) is required preferably in the areas of Project Management, Social Studies, Development Studies, or other relevant discipline.
  • The applicant should be enrolled currently or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the start date of the intern assignment.

Experience

While no previous work experience is required for the internship, it will be considered an asset if the intern has;

  • Skills in researching, writing, and editing content that is clear, concise, and effectively conveying key messages to target audiences.
  • Knowledge & usage of Google suite applications.

Language requirements

  • Fluency in English and Dzongkha is required.
